Good Day TorontoSt. Paul's Community, I am sending this emergency note to quickly inform you about the new restrictions just announced by the Doug Ford Government, effective midnight tomorrow (12:01 AM, January 14). Details of the new restrictions can be found here: https://news.ontario.ca//ontario-declares-second-provincia. ... I join my colleagues in the NDP Official Opposition in demanding an END to Fords HALF-BAKED measures that have continued to be WAY too little and come WAY too late to make a real difference. No paid sick days, no robust vaccination plan, no more restrictions for big box stores, no ban on evictions - Doug Ford has offered NOTHING that can truly help us stomp out COVID-19 - and just like many of you I'm angry about it. Our St.Paul's - our entire province deserves better! You can read more about our ideas for real action against this pandemic here: https://www.ontariondp.ca//horwath-blasts-ford-ignoring-ad. While expert research shows that these new stricter measures WILL NOT be enough, I urge everyone to familiarize themselves with Ford's announced rules and continue to listen to public health authorities, avoid unnecessary contacts, and to download the COVID tracking app onto your phone if you have one. My office and I are here to assist as best we can during these troubling times and confusing times. In Solidarity, Jill Andrew

IS ANYONE ELSE CONFUSED FROM FORD'S NON-ANNOUNCEMENT "COVID-19 RESPONSE" ANNOUNCEMENT? This is angering. People's lives are at stake and the premier continues to ignore EXPERTS who are DEMANDING *AS WE ALL ARE* more robust measures to keep us protected during this COVID-19 crisis! January 12, 2021Horwath blasts Ford for ignoring advice, making virtually no changes to deadly half-measures... QUEEN’S PARK NDP Leader Andrea Horwath said the data modelling finally revealed Tuesday was frightening but the Ford government’s lack of new measures in response was horrifying. According to the government’s own medical advice, more people are going to suffer and die as a result of Doug Ford’s refusal to act his refusal to invest in more protections and to close loopholes, said Horwath. Hospitals are in the process of being overwhelmed, and long-term care homes are in the grips of a deadly crisis. Thousands more people are getting sick every single day. The half measures and loopholes must stop. Ford did not announce any new help for long-term care homes, where the virus is raging. No changes were made to big box stores, or most workplaces. No paid sick days were brought in, and no new help at all for workers or businesses were announced. Horwath and the NDP MPPs, along with countless experts, are demanding: At least 10,000 more staff in long-term care, plus infection prevention and control experts in every nursing home Paid sick days so people stop being forced to spread the virus at work A ban on evictions so people don’t work sick out of fear of eviction Self-isolation centres A massive ramp-up of testing and contact tracing, including in-workplace and in-school testing, and the vaccination schedule Restricting non-essential travel in between regions The scary thing is that Doug Ford knows what needs to be done the experts’ recommendations are clear, said Horwath. But Mr. Ford is listening to lobbyists, listening to his cabinet, avoiding spending, and ignoring the experts’ advice and warnings and people are paying the price.

OUR FIGHT CONTINUES Ontario NDP Andrea Horwath January 11, 2021 Another day, another unacceptable delay from Doug Ford: Horwath HAMILTON NDP Leader Andrea Horwath released the following statement:... Delayed action against the surge in COVID-19 cases will cost lives. Doug Ford keeps doing too little too late, and he’s been stalling again for days. Tough new public health measures are now long overdue hospitals are already in crisis, and today we have surpassed 5,000 deaths, including 3,000 precious lives lost in long-term care homes, with thousands more getting sick every day. Tougher measures are not only overdue, they must be backed by a major investment in immediate supports like paid sick days for every Ontarian, safe isolation facilities, and direct financial help for small business owners and individuals.

It was great to get the chance to talk to some of my constituents as we enter the New Year still in a pandemic. I heard a lot of important concerns about the state of mental health care during this difficult time. There was a lot of worry, but also a lot of hope for the future. Thanks to everyone who came out!

It's time the Doug Ford government END this dog and pony show and hide and go seek and recall the legislature so we can get this #COVID19 crisis under control! Some of what I flag in my statement: VACCINES VACCINES VACCINES - let's get them out of the freezer and into our community!... SU$$ORTS for Eglinton West #LITTLEJAMAICA and other small biz and cultural workers impacted (shout out to our artists, comedians and fashion designers in #tostpauls) PAID SICK DAYs for our frontline healthcare and essential workers supporting our communities. AND MORE! #onpoli

It is a good day for the sickle cell community across Ontario. Yesterday, I tabled a bill to establish a provincial protocol that will help eliminate the gaps and inconsistencies in our healthcare system that are experienced by sickle cell patients. We know that sickle cell patients are disproportionately Black and Indigenous - and that sickle cell patients also live in chronic pain. ... They need their stories to be believed when they walk into an ER. They shouldn't have the pain medication they need unduly withheld from them. Sadly today, this is too often the case. This bill will ensure the collection of race-based data and require that the Ministry of Health conduct reviews to determine if sickle cell is currently receiving the funding and attention it deserves. It is our hope that this bill will help sickle cell patients in Ontario get the treatment and respect they need. Finally, I want to send a huge shout out to the Sickle Cell Association of Ontario for their determined, and exceptional advocacy on this important issue.

Today, I stood in solidarity with Solidarity Rally for Tropicana Workers Tropicana Community Services March on Queen's Park for Tropicana Workers Live at Tropicana Workers Rally and Ontario NDP MPPs Jamie West Wayne Gates and France Gélinas at Queen’s Park. I had a chance to speak to the Tropicana workers today predominantly BLACK WOMEN btw and to thank them - new and old for their labour and their love. Tropicana is almost 40yrs old! Tropicana meant EVERYTHING to me as ...a teen. #Scarborough Youth Resource Centre aka 'Rep Centre' ... It was my joy, my teacher, my safeplace. My community. Workers made it so. Because edicated workers were there pouring into so many of us youth predominantly BIPOC youth in the 90s...watering us with hope, guidance and motivation, I am here today - an MPP fighting hard for my #tostpauls community and all the youth and families here touched by the work of Tropicana staff. Andrew and Gélinas will be joined by Dr. Joel Moody, Director, Medical Support at Sickle Cell Association of Ontario; Alvin Merchant, Director of Communications, Sickle Cell Association of Ontario; and the Weekes family, whose son and brother has sickle cell.

Today is International Food Day, which recognizes the importance of food production and the ongoing effort to end hunger and food insecurity. Recently I recognized the many community gardens and farmers markets in our riding. The Beeton Cupboard at St. Michael & All Angels, the Churches on the Hill Food Bank at Timothy Eaton Memorial Church, the Humewood House Association, the food bank at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish Toronto, The Teresa Group, The Salvation Army North Toronto Community Church and the Avenue Road Food Bank are all doing great work trying to keep people fed, but let's not forget that in a better society they wouldn't be needed.

Huge congratulations to the Nia Centre for the Arts as they embark on an enormous renovation project to transform their space into the first professional multidisciplinary Black Arts Centre in Canada! I'm so glad that I was able to join you today for this historic undertaking. As the MPP for our area and even more importantly as a member of our Black community I couldn't have been more proud and inspired! Since being elected I have continued to advocate for more resources ...for our community arts spaces and culture sector from the provincial Ford Gov't. The fight continues...They truly do represent the voice, heritage and diverse identity of our communities! I cannot wait to see what the future holds for this incredible community institution and all the many creative ways our community will continue to thrive with our stories told and lived experiences documented because of it! ! #tostpauls Help us build the culture sector: www.jillandrewmpp.ca/saveartsculture

Doug Ford and his Conservative MPPs voted AGAINST long term care families and FOR corporations. It was disgusting, callous and I ache to think of the additional trauma this has caused long-term care families who have already lost so so much... Shame.

Jill Andrew 01.10.2020

Since the beginning of this pandemic, we have seen the cracks in our institutions exposed. Now in schools, we're seeing it again. Cases in classrooms are jumping, and schools are being forced to shut down. Why have we let it come to this? Sadly, for decades school boards across Ontario have been forced to operate with underfunded budgets, and overcrowded classrooms. This has left the system unable to prepare for any major disruption - let alone a global pandemic. ... It is time that we fund the institutions that support our communities with the resources they need. https://www.thestar.com//ontario-schools-with-covid-19-cas

TODAY IS THE INT'L DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD Today, on International Day of the Girl, we must acknowledge the monumental achievements of women and girls here in Ontario and across the globe. Today marks 25 years since the historic adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, to advance the rights and empowerment of women and girls everywhere. ... Women and girls worldwide are boldly speaking out against the discrimination, violence, and unequal opportunities we so often face. We are demanding change in all areas of society, leading global movements for change on issues ranging from sexual and reproductive rights to racial justice to equal pay. Here in Ontario, where COVID-19 has disproportionately impacted women, women and girls continue to fight for equity in the workplace, in our relationships, and in the public sphere. Girls and women of colour; Indigenous women and girls; those who are 2SLGBTQIA+; who are disabled; experience poverty and come from marginalized communities all face far greater barriers. We must work twice as hard to be seen and heard in the face of a system that is intent on silencing us, that is rife with racism, misogyny, ableism, homophobia and transphobia. Murdered and missing Indigenous women and girls continue to be denied meaningful justice. The voices of incarcerated women and sex workers are perpetually silenced. Liberation for all women and girls is crucial. Girls and young women in our province deserve to grow up knowing they belong anywhere, be it in STEM, sports, politics, the skilled trades, finance and business or the arts. Representation matters. They deserve to have the same job opportunities and earn the same wages as their male counterparts. They deserve the guarantee of workplaces free of harassment and discrimination. Today we honour the incredible milestones we have made so far and acknowledge what still must be done. As the first Queer Black woman to sit in Ontario’s legislature and as the Ontario NDP Women's Issues critic, I will continue to fight for all women and girls in my community of Toronto-St.Paul’s and across Ontario so we may see greater rights and opportunities for women and girls enshrined in our laws. I will continue to push the Ford government to adopt my Bill 61 which will recognize Eating Disorders Awareness Week across the province and my private member's motion to adopt an Interministerial Intersectional Gender Equity Strategy. If passed, this would see every government bill, motion, budget and regulation analyzed through a lens that scrutinizes its impact on women and girls. While #COVID19 has been dominating the headlines - don't think that we've forgotten about the other issues in our province as well. #onpoli We still need to END CARDING in Ontario. Carding IS NOT a community engagement tool ... Carding IS systemically racist. See more

Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay.Please remember our mind-body connection. Contrary to the desires of a world obsessed with productivity we ARE more important than our last accomplishment. We all need to remember this more often than not despite the number of rewards and reinforcements we get to try to forget it. COVID-19 exacerbates mental health problems. People in isolation, those without internet, cell phones or the basics of food and clean drinking water and thats just for... starters have experienced disproportionate mental strain from this pandemic. What we need are more resources, not less, for our communities - especially those made most vulnerable in this greedy capitalist system. If we are truly 'in this together', remember everyone - not just the convenient ones. This pandemic has manipulated our autonomy and our very concept of time space and place. We must fight hard to remember our minds' body and our bodies' mind during these difficult times. (thanks to Body Confidence Canada for the image)

The #COVID19 pandemic has had an effect on everyone - but ESPECIALLY WOMEN. Women are on the frontlines of education & healthcare, and take on the VAST MAJORITY of UNWAGED childcare. I'm hearing stories everyday from parents who have been forced to travel across the city to wait in long lines with their children to try and get a COVID-19 test. This is unacceptable and we need safe and fast testing available right here in Toronto-St. Paul's!

COVID-19 has hit communities across Ontario hard, including here in #tostpauls. In these tough times, we've been resilient, and we have come together to support each other through #COVID19. Today, I rose in the Legislature to thank the many volunteers who have brought the Community Food Tables program to life, and to also acknowledge that we still need to do more. I'm also sending a message of solidarity to those struggling right now. ... I see you, I support you, and I stand with you.

Cutting public transit is an equity issue. Reduced service makes buses more crowded and less safe. And has an especially heavy impact on lower income people who rely on public transit... Today, I stood in the legislature to fight for our local Toronto Transit Commission bus routes in #tostpauls.... Instead of investing in public transit Doug Ford and his Conservative govt are threatening to cut buses which will mean unsafe crowded rides with little to no social distancing. My community deserves better. We need more buses more drivers more investment - not less. Thank you to local TTCriders.ca volunteers and community members for standing up to Ford. I'm standing with you. #onpoli #keeptransitpublic

Educators are suffering behind the smiles that they're giving to our kids. They don't have the PPE, or even SPACE in their overcrowded classrooms to make sure it's a safe learning environment. FordNation, when will you admit your 'plan' isn't working and FIX THIS? #onpoli #onted

Jill Andrew 09.07.2020

I'm recognizing Women's History Month, International Day of the Girl, and Persons Day in Queen's Park and I get heckled by @fordnation's PC men. This is how patriarchy functions in politics. SHAME ON YOU. DO BETTER. ... (you can catch it in the background around the 16 second mark) #onpoli #WomensHistoryMonth #misogynoir I was deeply moved to learn that immediately following question period Chris Glover MPP, Spadina-Fort York challenged the @fordnation members on their inappropriate behaviour. Thank you Chris for having my back. It is exhausting.Orange heart #onpoli

Jill Andrew 01.07.2020

The Ford government continues to try and MISLEAD Ontarians when they say that we have enough PPE in our schools. Reports from across the province show that this is NOT true. In fact, in many cases, teachers are being forced to provide their own PPE, and have also been tasked with impossible cleaning regimens to keep their students safe. ... The Ford government is setting our education system up to fail. Today, I demanded action from this government, on the heels of the news that a school right here in Toronto-St. Paul's has had a teacher test positive for COVID-19.

Jill Andrew 21.06.2020

The Ford Govt has done practically nothing for small businesses across Ontario during this pandemic. I'm sick of the PCs lecturing everyone about their record on this while it's filled with two things: 1- Businesses closing ... 2- People losing their jobs Ps I also mentioned our Save Main Street plan. You can learn more about it here. It was an actual PROVINCIAL plan that would have seen direct rent relief go into the hands of our community businesses. Doug Ford said NO to our proposal. Its disgusting and sheer angering to see that over 6mths deep and our businesses are still dropping like FLIES without help from Doug Fords PC govt! https://www.ontariondp.ca//provincial-investments-needed-k

Today I was honoured to present a petition to raise ODSP and Ontario Works payments on behalf of constituents like Liza Butcher, as well as the more than 40,000 Ontarians who have signed the online petition. This pandemic has cruelly exposed many of the ways in which this government and previous governments have let down the most vulnerable members of our society. While this crisis is nowhere near over, I hope that once it is we can remember what we have learned and move forward with more compassion.

IN TODAY'S SEPT 18 NEWS: Ford again fails to protect most small businesses facing eviction MPP Catherine Fife (Waterloo), the Official Opposition NDP critic for Economic Growth and Job Creation, has responded to the Ford governments decision to re-introduce a temporary ban on commercial evictions: The Ford governments temporary ban on commercial evictions failed to protect most small businesses the first time it was introduced. It only offers protection for small businesse...s that are eligible for the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CECRA) that has been a bureaucratic nightmare and only applies to businesses with a 70 per cent drop in revenue. Instead of listening to small business owners whove been very clear this isnt working, the Ford government is simply doubling down on a failed policy thats done little to save Main Street. Small businesses are still on a knife-edge with many on the brink of shutting their doors forever. This will do nothing to help most struggling businesses whove been cut adrift by their landlords and dont qualify for this protection. Small businesses need direct supports as part of a real plan for economic recovery and a complete ban on commercial evictions until the pandemic is over, to give them the breathing room they need to start re-hiring workers and start growing again. The Official Opposition NDPs Save Main Street plan proposes a series to measures to support small businesses, charities and community-based non-profits, including: A 75 per cent commercial rent subsidy up to $10,000 a month for three months A utility payment freeze A safe restart and remote-work set up fund, which could help businesses install plexiglass barriers or buy PPE An auto insurance grace period for taxis and car-sharing drivers, established in partnership with the insurance industry and the Financial Services Regulatory Authority A designated emergency fund for small businesses and entrepreneurs who have faced historic barriers to accessing traditional capital, as proposed by the Canadian Black Chamber of Commerce.

I was glad to attend via phone tonight's Roehampton Residence Community Liason Committee meeting. We continue to work as a community to ensure everyone in our Midtown community feels safe AND welcome. We must continue with equity and inclusion as our focus...With necessary city, provincial supports and resources in place. Not everyone who is homeless is living with addiction. Some folks such as those on ODSP or OW have been pushed out of their homes too. Poverty is real. We need real community benefits...community infrastructure, INVESTMENT in social services and in people. We need *everyone* in Midtown to be able to live with dignity and therefore every interaction with anyone here, whether they live in a condo, house or a shelter, should be carried out with care.

WHAT DOES THE FORD GOVERNMENT HAVE AGAINST TRANSPARENCY?!? Ford gives himself the power to ram bills through overnight The Ford government has tabled a motion to change the rules of the legislature again. Among the changes, the government is moving to eliminate all reasoned amendments. NDP House Leader Gilles Bisson, MPP for Timmins MPP for Timmins... released the following statement in response: Doug Ford has made another move to grab power under the cover of the global pandemic. Ford and his government are eliminating reasoned amendments, giving themselves the power to ram through their bills practically overnight, with no consultation, no public input, no time for media or the public to read them, and no notice given to the people those bills could hurt. With this move, Doug Ford has given himself unprecedented, unnecessary and unchecked power to use his majority to make whatever laws he wants without any opportunity for the people of Ontario to object. We dont know what hes cooking up behind closed doors, but this change warrants serious worry for people who cant take any more of Fords cuts or backroom deals at their expense.

Last year I had a blast marching in the Labour Day Parade in Toronto. This year it has been cancelled because of the pandemic. The struggle for workers' rights, however, is more relevant then ever before. Even before COVID, the last year saw new attacks on collective bargaining from Bill 124, and this pandemic has opened many people's eyes to the ways in which workers have been underappreciated and disempowered. While next year there will be a Labour Day Parade again, I hope that we won't have forgotten the essential workers that have brought us through this pandemic.
