Baby Steps 1 and 3 are BOTH about saving for emergencies. Baby Step 1 = Save $1,000. Baby Step 3 = Save 3-6 month's worth of your expenses.... A lot of people complain that $1,000 isn't enough for an emergency fund. They're right. It's not. Baby Step 1 is just the beginning. 78% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. A lot of people have never had $1,000 saved in the first place. Baby Step 1 is a small cushion between you and life while you work to get out of debt during Baby Step 2. This is so that something small doesn't send you further into debt while you're working to get OUT of it. Baby Step 2 isn't supposed to be a comfortable process it needs to be as quick as possible so you can start making your money work for YOU. Once you've paid off all debt except for your home (if you had a mortgage before beginning the 7 Baby Steps), it's time to save up 3-6 months worth of expenses for Baby Step 3. 1. Calculate your monthly expenses. This is the amount of money you need each month to pay your rent/ mortgage, your essential bills like water, electricity, gas, buy food, and care for yourself and your immediate family. 2. Make a choice. This emergency fund should be able to cover at least 3 to 6 months worth of expenses. Whether your fund is 3 or 6 months worth is entirely up to you. Are you newly married with a small rent payment each month? 3 months may be plenty for your household. Are you a single parent with 2 children? Having 6 months of expenses saved up might make you feel more secure. Once you've decided which amount works for you, you're ready to start saving! 3. Roll Baby Step 1 over! Surprise - You've already got $1,000 to put toward your larger emergency fund! 4. Save like you mean it. With the same intensity you paid off debt, start saving up your 3-6 months of expenses. The sooner you get this saved up, the sooner you'll be able to move on to investing for your future. Put your emergency fund in a savings or money market account, so that you can access it quickly when you need it most. Don't invest your emergency fund. It's insurance. If you need to use it, pause your Baby Steps and build it back up.
