In recognition of International Women’s Day, EPS is highlighting our female police officers. Meet Amanda Johnson! Having graduated and attended Concordia College, her undecided career path led her to a warmer climate; living and volunteering in Mexico for a year before returning back to Canada. As a mother and wife, Amanda is now married to her husband, a firefighter with Strathcona County, raising their 4 yr old daughter, and 1 year old son alongside a successful career.... Having joined the RCMP in 2009 (inspired by her father), Amanda was posted to Inuvik, NT spending 2 years experiencing true northern life and its communities. In 2012, she joined the north district relief unit where I would usually spend around 30 days in each community. I got the opportunity to learn and be part of the traditions and way of life of the Inuit People. In 2014, a transfer back to Alberta brought her closer to her (then) fiance and family back in Redwater. From there she decided it was time for a career change. Wanting to begin a family of her own, and be closer to her hometown of Edmonton, she applied to the Edmonton Police Service. I had a couple of friends in EPS who spoke very highly of the organization and it was a no brainer..to make the move over. Amanda is currently in the Missing persons Unit at EPS, and has been since 2018. Missing persons investigations have always been a passion of mine, I was also involved in the missing and murdered indigenous women’s national review. I am also a current search manager in EPS and work with other agencies and trained volunteer searchers for large scale searches. To be able to help family and loved ones when they are in need and help them find answers they may not have been able to get otherwise. These can be very complex investigations that require a great deal of resources and work which is what I enjoy. When she’s not in uniform, you can find Amanda as a fitness coach, enjoying everything from yoga to lacrosse, hockey, or skating and snowboarding with her family. @eps_womeninpolicing #eps #careerprofile #yegcareer #joineps

[EPS Member Highlight] Meet Patricia Dvorak! "I loved it from the start," she said. "I loved training going through the 21-week recruit training... as soon as I got on the street, it was just that much better everything I wanted it to be. Dvorak recounts her first position with EPS as a patrol officer for NE Division. ... Soon, Dvorak was working patrol in the Beverly area, which allowed her to train in many other areas of policing, and also led to her co-founding the EPS' annual Bike Safety Festival in 2010 with her partner. A graduate from the Policing studies program at MacEwan University, Dvorak has been a member of the Edmonton Police Service since 2003; with experience working in EPS tactics training unit, and a promotion to the professional standards branch, before her most recent secondment as a detective with ASIRT (a government agency responsible for investigating all criminal matters involving police). I never thought I would be where I am said Dvorak, "I always had it in my head that I would be a police officer, but for me at that point (graduation) all I could see was the front-line patrol and responding to calls. I don't think I realized what an opportunity the EPS was able to provide me. I always tell that to people. Yes, there are the front-line calls for service and that's the backbone of any police service, but if you have specialty interests there's something for everybody. From a leading scorer of the Griffins women’s soccer team, circa 1994, and involvement as a star-competitive swimmer, working for EPS has allowed Dvorak to retain her love of team sport with EPS. "We have an Alberta female police soccer team," explained Dvorak. "It's EPS, Calgary police and some RCMP. Every year, minus COVID, we go to the North American Police Soccer tournament. We've (also) gone to the World Police & Fire Games." She's enjoying the chance to continue playing the sport she loves even if she admits she's no longer the marquee goal scorer on her team. "I'm more of the playmaker if you get me the ball I'll get it back to you," she said with a laugh. "The girls I play with on our police soccer team are all much younger than I am. So, I bring the experience. Quotations provided by Patricia Dvorak & Jefferson Hagen, MacEwan Athletics - Edmonton, AB. #womeninpolicing #joineps #yegcareer

While our Run with Recruiters program is paused, check out this awesome guide provided by the Fitness and Active Lifestyle Unit (FALU). . FALU Winter Running Tips. Now that we are required to exercise at home or outdoors we thought we would provide you with some tips (and ideas) on how to run outside in the winter. Some highlights:... 1. Layering is important and the photos provide different options that I have available depending on the weather from cool to very cold (Left to Right) 2. Footwear. If you are slipping, sliding, and your feet are cold and wet, you are probably not wearing the right shoes. 3. Cover all exposed area. Think of your head, fingers and face. 4. If you can’t run during the day, please wear reflective clothing and use a headlamp. 5. The additional winter gear along with winter footing will be more taxing. It will change your running mechanics. These additional loads will increase your injury risk. Focus on time spent running, NOT how fast or how far you are going. Start small and gradually increase to let your body adapt to this new stimulus. If you would like more information or assistance with training please contact the FALU. Stay well! #yegfitness #winterrunning

While our Recruiters missed connecting with #yegstudents for much of the year, we asked post-secondary students how they might bring their communities (a bit) closer. See how these teams went above and beyond to help those in need: - Team 1 (Evan, Richard, Kobe, Paolo & Joebert) Between donating blood to purchasing new winter necessities such as gloves, toques and socks to donate at the Bissell Centre. This team also worked an evening shift at Edmonton's Food Bank; preparin...g food packages. - Team 2 (Jacey & Ariel) Spun their wheels! Turning their personal car into a delivery service for the Canadian Volunteers United in Action Society (CANAVUA). They delivered dozens of hot meals to seniors and hungry groups across Edmonton. - Team 3 (Taina, Joshua, Gina, Braden, Madysan, Kennedy & Matthew) When restrictions prevented the Concordia curling team from hosting a fundraiser, they turned to friends and family, soliciting a whopping 98kg of food, raising over $515 for the Edmonton Food Bank and a further $570 for the Today Centre! (using their curling brooms to ensure 2m distancing, of course!) - Amazing job to all participants. Thank-you for stepping up and helping our communities! #mondaymotivation #yegcommunity MacEwan University University of Alberta Concordia University See more
