Just doing my plant orders. Catalogues everywhere, Soon there will be sneak peeks of new colors and new varieties. They will be in limited supply since they are a trial. We are only getting 33 plants of each color. Here are two vegetative portulacas (sold in single pots, not the traditional portulaca), that can take hot and dry.... Colorblast Guava and Colorblast double magenta. And this lovely Nemesia. The nemesia just don't quit blooming, love you even if you don't deadhead. No pre-orders unless you want a full 33, and delivery is not guaranteed since our growers sometimes have crop failures, or their suppliers sometimes can't supply the cuttings. We wouldn't know that till delivery time.

Has anyone ever had a close look at a snapdragon seed pod?

Just to let you know that most of the plant catalogues have come in. There is some luscious stuff in there. Will soon be posting teases about what will likely be available next year. --The Vermillionaire Cuphea (Humming Bird Magnet plant) will definitely be on the list--had lots of positive feedback. --Will try again for the Chocolate cosmos--a brown flower on long stems that really smells of chocolate when the sun is shining. --and of course, the cute Golf Ball plant, Craspedia. --and we will try to find room for a few more tomato plants so no one misses out next year.

It's a good feeling having the greenhouse closed, the plants having new homes, and cleaning up to prepare for the next season. Even though the actual selling season is short, being a greenhouse operator has jobs that go on year round. The only thing is, from now to Christmas there is no pressure (except a couple of order deadlines). Here is how the months look: JULY and maybe part of AUGUST (depending if it's too hot to work outside, or not) 1. weeding, (yes, lots of weeds...Continue reading

We are now CLOSED FOR THE SEASON. Due to more rain, resulting in unpredictable road conditions, and the fact that we had a very successful season, leaving us with very little plant selection, we have decided to close the greenhouses earlier than usual. Thank you for your patronage. See you next year.... Please stay safe and healthy. Of course, this page will not be closed. Keep checking in for gardening information.

Well, it's that time of the season. To help our remaining plants find their forever homes, we are now having our sale BUY ONE--GET ONE FREE (except hanging baskets--$20 each--as of closing time today we had only 10 hanging baskets left) We have no more tomatoes, are very low on veggies, but still a good selection of annual ornamental plants.

I love using my Credit Card where I earn points. But during my new experience with debit/credit this greenhouse season, I learned that credit cards with lots of perks cost the business a higher % of credit card fees. So my perks are at least in part covered by the business. As a business I had a choice between two plans: --one plan charged the specific credit card rate for each card (about 1.5 % for basic credit card with no perks up to 3.5+% for those with more benefits).... --the other option is a blended rate for all credit cards. --plus a standard transaction fee for every debit/credit transaction. --there is no % on debit card transactions. So, knowing this, I will no longer use my credit card when shopping at small family businesses--will be activating my debit card for use there, because those small businesses shouldn't be paying for my points. I would love if everyone who reads this and is thoughtful of small business, share this post. We will still accept credit cards in the greenhouse, but will be educating the public if the opportunity arises.

I want to thank our customers who follow the rules and use common sense in the greenhouse. One of the rules is: don't touch it unless you are buying it. It's hard to resist the impulse to pick up that little pot to examine the plant. It is also often a case of "the grass is greener", and another pot looks better than the one picked up.... So, while technically, you should ask us to spray the pot and put it back ourselves, we'd never know if the customer put it back where they got it. But today after a busy day and a lot of work besides customer service, just as we were closing, I noticed--a number of little pots not returned to their places--they were between larger pots like mosquito plants and geraniums, between the bushy grasses and behind other plants. We don't necessarily water the larger pots every day, but these little ones need watering twice a day. So if "hidden" in the wrong place they get missed when watering, and in 2 days would likely be dead.. When I found the first ones, I made a tour of the greenhouse and had to relocate no less than 25 little pots--the pot stuffers that hang on the sides of the benches. Had I not found them, that would be a loss of over $100. Are these the same people that change their mind about a package of meat in the grocery store and leave it in the canned goods section (at least someone would notice that). While this kind of behavior is disappointing, it makes me appreciate even more our many considerate customers. Thank you.

We just learned that some Apple devices don't take you to our greenhouse--they take you to Lamont. Androids take you to the correct place. We would need an Apple device to make a change, but there are no Apple devices in the family. The written directions in our "About" story are correct.

We have finally moved into the modern age. The debit/credit card machine is ready to go!!!

Here's the official news about our greenhouse. We are allowed to operate (with rules). Hours of operation: 7 days per week, 10 am to 7 pm.... We will have one-way alleys, and the tomato/herb house with single alley, will be one person at a time. There is a hand washing station at the door. Customers must wash hands or use their own hand sanitizer. Rules will be posted: -- keeping 2m distance, --don't touch things unless you are buying. --don't push carts around, but may use them to assemble your order. --if you use the outhouse, let me know so I can spray it after. --a list of questions at the door--the usual about contact with travellers, or cough, or fever, etc. --if children must be brought, I prefer they stay outside, or under tight control of parent and close by them. --we will be taking debit cards (probably credit cards), but the equipment may not be here and learned during the first week of May. Still taking cash and cheques. --we will be wearing protective gear. --since it's just the two of us, when it's busy it will be hard to assemble orders for curbside pickup. If this is a must, do it at a slow time, and book an appointment for pickup. But with many not working we don't know what days/times will be busy or slow. --I understand travelling with a friend, but if too many come at once, may have to limit number in greenhouse at a given time. -- See you soon.

How did you guess that some of my favorite colors in plants are lime green and black. What I love, I grow in the greenhouse.

Our greenhouse will be in MINT CONDITION this season. We will have a huge variety of mints for tea and culinary use. --Mojito mint--the real deal --Ginger mint... --Orange mint --Grapefruit mint --Apple mint --Strawberry mint --After 8 mint --Peppermint --English mint --Spearmint And last, but not least, Indian Mint. I bought this one as a pot stuffer since it grows so long and vigourously, but is supposed to make good tea and help for headaches.

Four years ago this day, I posted this poem from many papers my mother saved (and believe me, she saved everything). It created a storm of spring lovers! Ever...y year in February it enjoys another circle between friends, so I thought whoever has not seen it, should. It is for your Garden of Everyday Living. See more

We got the word, we will be allowed to open to sell plants. We will be opening May 1 as usual, but at this point don't know what restrictions and procedures will be expected. We will keep you posted. ... Meanwhile, a sneak peek at some pretty petunias:

It is a different and trying time. We don't know yet where the greenhouse industry is going with the pandemic. We may or may not be allowed to do business. But if we are allowed, there may have to be special considerations. We may have to take orders on here or on the phone and have them ready for you (that eliminates impulse shopping which is very important in greenhouses), or maybe by appointment, maybe just limiting the number of people at one time, with precautions.... Will post updates as soon as we know definitive information.
