In-person class instruction resumes today. A new session of movement flow classes in Victoria today. Excited that we can get back to learning and moving.
When I finished the first movement flow training last year in Vancouver I knew I was apart of something about to explode. I came back to the island totally inspired to keep refining my practice, but it was for the most part in isolation. I had the occasional in-person opportunity to train with other MF movers to keep me connected. Now it's evident that the community continues to grow. For me, it's getting easier to find other movers who train this system. It's only been a few months working with these talented movers but the passion we share for this practice is building a strong base for our local community right here on the island. Thanks so much to Nick Sargeant and Michael Toru for your dedication.
Challenge, Recovery ..Repeat is the underlining theme for my training in Movement Flow. Flow creation doesn't happen every session, in fact, there are many training days where I simply work on developing the strength and mobility of certain movements. Backbends and Inversions are where I generally get snagged in a flow sequence. So once I have adequately WARMED UP my body, I repeat drills and skills of these challenging shapes, followed by taking some reset, recovery or ev...en restorative moment before going ahead. The benefit of taking a training session, like the movement flow level one certificate, is about empowering your training time. When we clear our calendar to attend intensives or certificates it creates an atmosphere of dedication. The game is on! This image was from my first level one training with Slava Goloubov the founder of Movement Flow. Online certificates are available in this system if you want to do the deep dive.
Getting out in the short day sun of December this past week provided a fun pavement jam session. This impromptu session was designed around movements that required little floor contact. Basically, anything that didn't need soft landings and minimized surface area like rolls. I continue to practice on different surface areas to see what in my practice is still available.
I do a lot of cross-training for the movement flow system. One area that I love exploring is the use of my rope wall (which comes from the traditions of Iyengar yoga known as Kurunta yoga). I am sharing a modification I came up with to taste into the deeper backbend as my leading leg dips further to the floor. Level changes were created by swapping out furniture. #kurunta #crosstraining #movementhack #frontwalkover #gymnastics
How you practice can be as important as what you practice. The movement flow system allows for endless exploration of combinations it often feels like. Tapping into improvisation is key to this process. At the same time, repetition helps smooth out the flow and improve skill. So be sure to find the balance between these elements.
Attempting windmill legs + cartwheel = helicoptero skill development
This fall I officially become a certified Movement Flow Instructor. I am so excited to be able to continue this journey and share this system with those who are curious about taking their movement off the yoga mat and into the nuances of a generalist approach.
Putting elements together that someone else suggests can strengthen your practice.
At the end of the level one training, I had the opportunity to share with the group a movement flow creation.
