LEST WE FORGET: Today, to honour November 11, we went into the JourneyWoman archives to share an article written by the Original JourneyWoman, the late Evelyn Hannon, called Remembering Flanders Fields in Belgium. Evelyn wrote the article after a visit to Belgium in 2014, which affected her deeply. On this trip, she visited Flanders Fields, Tyne Cot Museum, the In Flanders Fields Museum and the Menin Gate Memorial. Evelyn writes: When I was in grade school, all students w...ere required to memorize the poem, 'In Flanders Fields' by John McCrae. At that time in the Fifties, to us youngsters they were simply words and we associated them only with the pretty 'scarlet poppies' that people wore on Remembrance Day. John McCrae was the Brigade Surgeon of the 1st Canadian Field Artillery. In high school, we were taught about The Great War (WW1) of 1914 - 1918. We learned the facts and memorized the dates for our exams but that was as far as the learning went. We were teenagers and not interested in knowing more. Then in 2014, in commemoration of the Great War Centenary, I was invited to Flanders, Belgium to actually see Flanders Fields, the poppies, and thousands of soldiers graves as far as the eye could see. Now, with a heavy heart, I understood the enormity of the senseless suffering and loss. Before I leave I, along with all the other townspeople and tourists, pay my respects to the fallen. Lest we forget... Thank you to the women and men who served and continue to serve. We are so grateful to you. #LestweForget https://buff.ly/3ePgSWg

LONDON CALLING! Ah, London: both medieval and modern, London is a world capital beloved by history buffs, artists and women from around the world. From its ancient Roman ruins to its breathtaking Norman architecture, a walk through London is a journey through its past, with landmarks like the Tower of London, St Paul's Cathedral, and Westminster Abbey offering a peek into the city's long, often turbulent, history and rise to prominence. . Joy Fox, on our JourneyWoman Advisor...y Council, grew up near London during WWII. She says: "When WWII started, our family lived close to London and evacuated to Rowhedge, Essex. We moved to Wivenhoe, also in Essex, when I was 7, where I lived until we emigrated to Canada when I was 21. After getting married to a British chap, we returned many times to England, on holidays and when my husband's employer twice transferred him to England, we returned to live in Hertfordshire and Essex. We spent quite a lot of time in London, walking the streets and visited many different parts of the country. Before being transferred back to Canada, I returned to England and Scotland to trace my heritage. . Joy's waiting to go back to London when it's possible, to visit the Highlands of Scotland and walk again in England. In the meantime, she's recommending her top choices for virtual seminars tours about London from our partner Context Travel. These include virtual tours of the Tube, Tower of London, Westminster, Sir John Soane’s Museum, London’s New East End, and Banksy. (Please note, some of these are this week, so you'll want to sign up soon!) PS Don't forget to read Joy's "Solo Travel Memoir: Healing After Heartbreak" on our website. You can also email any solo travel questions to Joy at [email protected]. Cheerio!

Over here at JourneyWoman, our Advisory CouncIl Members are friends and family. When one has a birthday, we all celebrate. Today is Marillee Straughan Carroll's birthday. Over the past eight months, we've interviewed her countless times for various features, including a must-read memoir recounting a life of global travel adventures. We see her smiling face every Friday morning on our women's circle calls, where we discuss anything and everything travel, womanhood, current i...ssues, life. When you dispense with small and go deep, when you have a common interest like travel, you become family rather quickly. Recently, Marillee spent a weekend diving deep into her grandmother's travel diaries from the summer of 1939 that lull before the start of World War II. A lifelong learner, she's immersed herself in the history of this period over the past decade. But this? This was a journey of the heart, and made for an epic weekend of armchair travel for this grounded traveller. Read her story by clicking the link below one of many amazing features in the soon-to-be-released November issue of JourneyWoman Magazine and join us in wishing our sister Marillee the happiest of birthdays.
