Take care of the land, and the land will take care of you. Did you know we plant three trees for every one we harvest and that we look after these new forests for 15 years? Happy spring and happy growing! #Kalesnikoff #TImberInspires

The SHARE Housing complex in Nelson is now accepting rental applications, and will offer 39 workforce housing units. The doors will open as early as September 1, 2021. Ken Kalesnikoff, president and CEO of Kalesnikoff, said: There is an obvious need for projects like this in our community, and we are thrilled to be involved with our mass timber. We commend the Kootenay Christian Fellowship for their vision, their leadership, and their efforts to bring this housing complex to... life. Wherever possible, we have used Kootenay products and companies for this project. For example, one of the great features of the building are the Glulam beams and GLT panels for the complex that come from Kalesnikoff’s new mass timber facility, said Founding Director and Chairperson of SHARE Housing Board Jim Reimer. Visit sharehousing.ca for more information and a rental application. #Kalesnikoff #TimberInspires

Krystle Seed, Kalesnikoff’s CFO and part of the fourth generation to run the family business, started out as a summer student and worked her way up, honing her leadership skills along the way. One of the key parts to leadership is identifying what people’s skill sets are, seeing the value they bring and then just creating the space to let them do their best work, she said, adding that she delights in helping others succeed. Overall the forest industry has been more traditi...onally male, but it’s been really exciting to see how that’s been changing over the years both in our company and in the industry as a whole, she says. At Kalesnikoff, we have women in all areas of our operations and are thrilled to see more women coming forward as our business expands. The advice I would give a young woman is that she needs to know herself and where she’s going, she says. Try new things, educate yourself as much as possible and then really listen to yourself: Where do you get passion in life? What energizes you? What lights you up from the inside? Once you know what you want, go for it!

DeEtte Mackenzie, 33, started at Kalesnikoff over a decade ago. Now one of our Mass Timber Team Leaders, she is currently responsible for around 20 staff members. She would love to hear more female voices on the production radio, and welcomes more diversity at work. Every year I see more women joining our work force, so I think we are doing something right! she says. As a member of our production leadership group, DeEtte is proud to be at the table for some very cool open ...dialogues about inclusion. Krystle Seed, Kalesnikoff’s CFO, praises DeEtte for holding these conversations. We’re excited to have DeEtte on our team. In addition to her talent, she has the courage to ‘choose to challenge,’ and has helped diversify and enrich our workplace as a result. DeEtte credits wise parenting with helping her become who she is today. I’m glad we discuss women in industry, and I do get asked about advice to women starting out a fair amount, and these are good things, she says. But, as importantly, before you start talking to women starting out their careers, you have to tell parents that you can raise your daughter to know she can do whatever she wants, she says. My Dad never told me I couldn’t do what boys do. He never said I couldn’t help him fix something, even though debatably I was never terribly good at helping him fix things. But he didn’t stop me from helping him or doing things in the yard. I drove tractors, got firewood, and had dolls. I remember having a Playskool kitchen set but also a tool bench with plastic tools, and I played with both because both were interesting and fun. Kalesnikoff is currently hiring Finishing Team Members, and welcomes all candidates to apply. https://www.kalesnikoff.com/careers-mass-timber-lumber/

As stewards of our land, we look at any opportunity to reuse and recycle, whether it’s leftover runs that we can set aside for concurrent projects or woodchips from the processing floor that go towards heating our facility. #TimberInspires #Kalesnikoff

Devoting his life to building Kalesnikoff Lumber Co. Ltd., Pete Jr helped guide the company from a bush mill cutting just 3,000 FBM per day to one of the cleanest well run speciality mills in B.C. today, producing 300,000 or more FBM per day while still carefully honouring our company’s 80 year old guiding principle, take care of the land and the land will take care of you. #TimberInspires #Kalesnikoff

Abundant in wildlife, lakes, and forests, the Kootenay mountains are home to some of the most beautiful wilderness and productive forest zones in the world. Here at Kalesnikoff, we actively exercise the work hard, play hard mentality. For us, it's easy when the backcountry is in our backyard. It’s one of the many things we are thankful for. Happy Thanksgiving! #TimberInspires #Kalesnikoff Photo by our very own, Jeremy Van Walsh
