Indigenous patients are now able to anonymously report experiences of racism in B.C.'s health-care system, thanks to a new online tool. The B.C. Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres (BCAAFN), whose website hosts the app, aims to use the information to figure out patterns of racist incidents in the health-care sector, and present solutions on how to address these issues with policymakers. https://www.cbc.ca//safespace-app-report-racism-indigenous... Midwife (n.) Defn: one who assists women in childbirth," c. 1300, literally "woman who is 'with' " (the mother at birth), from Middle English mid "with" + wif "woman." To enable a [pregnant individual] to give birth in their own time, requires being with that individual rather than only doing things to them.... being "with-woman" centres around building equal relationships based on trust and empathy, and recognition of the infinite variation we see in each birthing individual... and their babies. The concept of "woman centred care" was informed by feminist principles, was relationship based and aimed to shift control from health professionals and institutions back to the birthing individual. https://www.sciencedirect.com//arti/pii/S1877575621000240

Public demand for midwives continues to grow in BC ... Here’s the problem. BC midwives are the second lowest paid in their profession across the country. Second. Lowest. Paid. Further, BC midwives are excluded from provincial benefits such as health and disability, pension and parental leave. We are excluded from the Covid pay provided to physicians and nurses to help offset the additional workload of the pandemic.... We’re in this situation because successive B.C. governments have failed to invest in midwifery.

Introducing the owner of Mighty Oak Midwifery and founder of midwifery services in Kamloops, Registered Midwife Joanna Norman! Did you know? Joanna was the first Registered Midwife in Kamloops, establishing Mighty Oak Midwifery Care in 2008. Joanna serves as Head of the Department of Midwifery at Royal Inland Hospital since its inception in January 2011.... Joanna is a Past President of the Canadian Association of Midwives (CAM-ACSF) ) and a past member of the Board of Directors of the Midwives Association of BC (MABC), which she served for over a decade. She was a tribunal member of the BC Hospital Appeal Board for nearly 10 years and she is a clinical instructor and member of the Advisory Board for the UBC Midwifery Education Program. Joanna is an associate member of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada (SOGC) and served on the SOGC’s International Women’s Health Committee (IWHC) from 2008 2013. Joanna now enjoys a quieter phase of her career since stepping down from provincial and national advocacy; she continues to work with RIH & IHA leadership to advance Midwifery in the Kamloops-Thompson region, but her heart work is the one-to-one care of local families through pregnancy and birth With open heart and mind, Joanna offers experience, genuine warmth, gentle hands and a strong sense of faith in the natural process of birth and the innate strength of women she serves. Shared from Dr. Sara Wickham, I get asked from time to time to give concrete examples of systemic racism in maternity care. Here's one that came across my desk today. I've been looking at one of the Anti-D [Rhogam] leaflets handed out in the UK.... Not only is it full of pictures of white people, but it says that. "About 85% of people have the RhD Factor, and the other 15% do not." I have been researching this area for more than 20 years, so I can tell you that that figure is only true for people of European descent. In fact, one per cent of people of Asian descent, eight percent of people of African descent and 15 percent of people of European descent are rhesus negative. The fact that we give out information leaflets containing data and pictures which only represent and relate to white people is systemic racism. All the eggs a woman will ever carry form in her ovaries while she is a four month old fetus in the womb of her mother. This means our cellular life as an egg begins in the womb of our grandmother. Each of us spent five months in our grandmother's womb, and she in turn formed in the womb of her grandmother.... We vibrate to the rhythm of our mother's blood before she herself is born, and this pulse is the thread of blood that runs all the way back through the grandmothers to the first mother. ~ Layne Redmond, When The Drummers Were Women Mara Berendt Friedman New Moon Visions Sacred Art Reposted with thanks @cpmhc
