So fun story, my wife Cassie Knez and I are currently looking for a place to live and we happened to find this Lovely 3 Bedroom home on kijiji. Upon first gl...ance the ad looks normal and nothing suspicious so we went ahead and spoke to the lady named Steph. She seemed nice and everything was going great. Quick to respond and no red flags in the messages. Like all landlords she asked for our SIN’s for a credit check and the usual contact information and such. She asked for last months rent and said we could pay first upon moving in. Once again fairly standard practices. Where it gets a little fishy is as soon as we transferred the money and we’re given a receipt for our transaction, we noticed the same ad on realtor.ca for 1650.00 plus utilities. This immediately put up a red flag for my wife and I, so my wife contacted the real estate agent. Surprise surprise the realtor (from realtor.ca) informed us that the property is owned by someone else and this kijiji ad is a scam. My wife rushed you the bank to cancel the transfer but it was to late. The money is gone and there is nothing they can do about it. Steph, if that’s her real name dropped contact with my wife and has most likely moved on to her next target. We lost 1600 dollars on a fake ad and we want to make sure no one else falls victim to this same ad. This ad already has over 500 visits so it is definitely catching the eyes of a few people. We have filled out a police report and have contacted the proper channels and although there is no chance of getting the money back, we can at least hope to put an end to another con artist. For this holiday season I hope everyone stays safe and avoids falling victim to the same fate my wife and I did. Do your due diligence, and if it sounds to good to be true it probably is. I don’t need anyone’s five cents on what we should’ve done, or how you would’ve done it differently. So please if your going to post be supportive. Merry Christmas.
