Inspired by a verse in the Holy Quran, the sculpture uses a classic Arabic font to represent waves and suggests a sense of movement. Eight meters high and six meters wide, it sits alongside a mosque. As 2019 wraps up, we hope you’ve enjoyed exploring the history of architecture and typography with us every month. Our calendar ends in the present day, where we rely on programs, algorithms, and computers to aid us in the design process. The building pictured here is done in the Parametric style, meaning it was designed by manipulating the mathematic equations of a 3D model. The typeface here is Source Sans Pro. This is the first open-source font family from Adobe, and was... designed primarily for user interfaces. It offers wide language support, making it accessible to anyone around the world. These two examples show just how much we are living in a digital world; it is our present and our future! We’ve had lots of fun sharing and nerding out over design with you this year. November marks the Post-Modernist section of our 2019 calendar. Post-modernism took hold in the mid to late 20th century as a response to the clean sterility of modernism and the idea of perfection. Post-modernist design embraced excess, irony, and the borrowing of several unrelated styles. Excess is captured perfectly in the design of Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. The curves of the building were designed to appear random; the shape of the building meant to imitate a ship; and the material of the building meant to resemble fish scales. The act of borrowing several styles can be seen in the typeface Archer by Tobias-Frere Jones. Although designed in 2001, Frere-Jones references geometric slab serif type of the 30’s, while adding charming details to make it appear friendlier.

October marks the Mid-Century Modernism section of our 2019 calendar. The beautiful structure you see here is the Guggenheim Museum in New York City. It was designed by one of our favourite architects, Frank Lloyd Wright, in 1959. Wright pushed the limits of modernism by creating a completely curved structure. His goal was to emphasize the art in the building by allowing visitors to take an elevator up to the top level, and experience the art while slowly descending down a ...seashell-like ramp, uninterrupted. It goes to show how Wright was committed to the function of a space just as much as its beautiful form. Around the same time, a typeface was released that also combined function and form in aesthetic harmony. Helvetica, designed by Max Miedinger in 1957, was meant to be a completely neutral typeface that should give no additional meaning. Helvetica succeeds in this goal, while also being balanced and proportioned; clear and crisp. That is why it is one of the most widely used typefaces in corporate communications.

With the long weekend behind us, it is time to officially welcome September! This month, we are taking a look at Art Deco, which is instantly recognizable as the most popular design style of the 20's and 30's before dropping off around WWII. Art Deco was a truly international style, appearing in exhibitions all around the world in the form of jewelry, arts, fashion, and of course, architecture and typography. The "Broadway" typeface featured here is the quintessential "Roarin...g 20's" look, with its clean geometry and extreme thick and thin strokes, which suggest glamour and sophistication. If you want to see the largest concentration of Art Deco architecture in the world, look no further than South Beach, Miami, Florida. South Beach features an "Art Deco historic district," which protects over 960 historic buildings including The Carlyle Hotel, pictured here. With its ivory-white facade and clean curved corners, the Carlyle was designed to exude the fashionable, modern and ritzy look of Art Deco.
