Update from our wonderful KP Marina: Good Morning, On Friday, April 16th, a new round of ‘recommendations and instructions’ were announced by the Ontario government and at first it seemed that we would not be impacted but I’m afraid there will be a required change to our services. Below is an excerpt from the amended regulation:...Continue reading

https://kawarthalandtrust.org/ Please join Martha and Rachel for a 1 1/2 - 2 hour hike in the Clear Lake North Wetland. This beautiful property is located behind Cassidy and Mackenzie Bay. It includes hardwood forests, hemlock forests, wetlands, a limestone escarpment and an oak/juniper meadow. We are currently raising awareness and funds to purchase these 175 acres (approx) for the Kawartha Land Trust to protect it from further development. Please meet at the parking lot behind the KP beach (at the bottom of Kawartha Park Road) on Saturday Oct 10 at 10 am. Questions? Email Martha at [email protected]

Beautiful fall morning in Kawartha Park.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Sonny (Townsend) Cook, last evening at Belleville General Hospital. Sonny was a life-long Stoney Laker and member of the KPCA, staying for extended summers on the family island Majestic. Sonny was a free spirit and friend to all. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Citizen scientists, like those at Stoney Lake in the Kawartha Lakes region, are critical to tracking the spread of starry stonewort. Their rake tosses and reports allow for quick detection of new infestations. You can sign up to help out here: https://starrystonewort.org/volunteer/

An hour before these photos were taken, this patch of the Heber Rogers trails was covered in Buckthorn saplings. A small but mighty team of Buckthorn Busters made a small dent in a very large problem. Thank you Judy, Marten, Alessandra, Joe and Grace (and Ranger) for your time and energy this morning. The KPCA is made up of wonderful people! We will do this again later in the fall. Stay tuned.

KPCA 02.06.2020

REMINDER - all you Buckthorn Busters out there. We meet tomorrow (Thursday Aug 20) at 9 am at the KP marina to fight back the infestation (physically distancingnof course) that is happening along the trails in Heber Rogers. Bring garden shears and any Weed Out, Round-Up that you may have. Apparently, just snipping doesn’t kill the plant and it will simply grow new shoots - kind of like Medusa! We snip than spray. And alternative to this is bringing a spade and digging the pla...nts right up. Wear long pants, gloves, closed-toed shoes, hat etc. We shall see what we can do! Thank you!

Natural shorelines are essential to healthy lakes! Thank you to the amazing team who showed up yesterday for the final planting in the Camp Kawartha shoreline r...estoration project. (EC volunteers, CK workers, and Lake Guardians.) A huge thank you to landscape geniuses Helen Batten and Doug Kennedy. We couldn't have done it without you. And of course, last but not least, an EC shoutout to Lois, who steered this exciting project for two years! Go to our website to read about the role of naturalized shorelines in lake water quality. Another Invasive Species to add to the list.

KPCA 26.04.2020

This is becoming the era of invasive species on our lake. Most of us have spent a lot of energy and conversation this summer around Gypsy Moth and Starry Stonewort. I’d like to introduce you to another baddie: European Buckthorn. This plant was purposely planted by settlers as it makes good hedgerow. Unfortunately, like most invasive species, it also out-competes the native flora and fauna. Buckthorn spreads by birds eating its yummy berries (yummy to birds at least) and then... pooping out the seeds all over the neighbourhood. We have the beginnings of a nasty infestation of Buckthorn in the Heber Rogers Trails on the west side of Hiawatha Lane. If left untouched, these plants will fill the meadow, eliminating junipers, wild flowers and young hardwoods. I would like to organize a Pruning Party! Let’s get together and start eliminating these plants. They are all very small at this point, so gardening shears and pruning shears should do the job. Please be at the KP Marina at 9am on Thursday August 20. Bring your shears and water bottle. Long pants, closed shoes and gloves are recommended. Please contact me if you have any questions.
