Another weekend, another personal project. (True, this one is a day late, but I started working on it at 11:00pm last night, so I'm still going to count it!) This weekend, I wanted to create something based on some influences from the new X-Com video game and 2001: A Space Odyssey (Which admittedly, I've never seen). Specific inspiriation includes: http://bit.ly/j8HH7i, http://bit.ly/j8se0m, and http://bit.ly/llbbM7. Everything was created in Photoshop, with the background im...ages coming from morgueFile.com (http://mrg.bz/N1jfno) The same image was horizontally flipped and used for the reflection on the "Monolith's" themselves. The "Monolith" text coming out of the water is Titillium (Not sure what size, font weight, etc. as I had to rasterize it to remove the bottom to match the horizon). As always, feel free to let me know what you think. Any constructive criticism, critiques, or other suggestions are always welcome!

After finally finding some time for myself, I've finally been able to create my sixth "Make Something Cool Every Weekend" personal project! This one was was inspired by some of the recent design work I've seen on the IGN as part of their E3 coverage. I wanted to recreate a similar look with a high contrast focal point (The red circle in this case), and some thin fonts (Titillium, my personal favorite). I never intended to have the focus on the ampersand as seen in this final shot, but after playing around, I realized that I never really give ampersands their due! I'm not dead set on the font I've used (Lynda for the font geeks out there), but it's definitely more interesting then what's available from some of your more standard fonts! As always, feel free to let me know what you think!

After a number of busy weekends with client work, I've finally found some time for myself, resulting in my second "Make Something Cool Every Weekend" project this weekend! This one was was just based on a personal interest to design a simple, eye catching logo, that would say something about the companies name, and their service area, all in one effective logo. As always, feel free to let me know what you think!

My first "Make Something Cool Every Weekend" project in a few weeks! This one was created after seeing a number of logos being created recently with a circular/stitched look to them. I wanted to give it a shot, and I think it turned out pretty good! Feel free to let me know what you think!

Brandon Homelessness.ca http://www.brandonhomelessness.ca After a few meetings with the Community Advisory Board (CAB) for Homelessness, I was chosen to help the Brandon Homelessness group redesign and redevelop their existing website (Which you can see at the end of this gallery).... They were looking to have the new site setup with a CMS to help in the addition, and removal of the sites content. As such, the site was designed and developed around the Joomla 1.5 Content Management System. For the design, I wanted to keep things simple and clean for those who might be visiting the website in legacy browsers (IE 6-, etc.), as well as for those who might have limited internet connections who couldn't afford to load an image heavy website. The following is a collection of personal projects where I had a personal motivation to create pieces for personal interest, education, and expansion of my own skills and abilities.

Trails West Inn.mb.ca http://www.trailswest.mb.ca Brandon's Trails West Inn was looking to refresh their existing website, while placing a strong focus on the key features that people would be looking for when searching online for lodging with the city.... A showcase of large images at the top of the site helps to focus in on these key features that the Trails West Inn wanted to promote to potential customers. Just a little personal project I worked on this afternoon, involving some new fonts downloaded (Liberator and Onramp - losttype.com/browse/), some textures from Subtle Patterns (subtlepatterns.com), and some layer styles I found quite a while ago. After I got the text out of the way, I applied a Lens Correction filter, with a Fix Red/Cyan Fringe setting of +100 to the Attack of the Green Men From Mars text, to give it a sort of retro, arcade game feel. I also applied a Lens C...orrection filter, with a Vignette amount of -100 to the background texture. As always, feel free to let me know what you think! I'm looking for advice for the base of the monitor actually. I had a hard time getting a gradient I was happy with to recreate the round base for the monitor. Any constructive criticism, critiques, or other suggestions are always welcome!

After a long break from personal weekend projects, I've finally gotten around to creating something new! This weekend, I wanted to recreate my dual monitor setup in Photoshop. This is the result of that goal! The only parts that weren't recreated by me from scratch are the Samsung logo/font, and the Energy Star logo at the top right of each monitor. The rest of the monitor, including the frame, and touch sensetive buttons (Text and shapes) at the bottom right were all created... using Photoshop's various shape tools. While I took some liberties in the design (Font's aren't 100% accurate, but a very close match IMO), I did actually break out a tape measure to get the dimensions down as close as I could. This meant working with CM's within Photoshop... something I have never had to before, which was quite interesting! As for the two monitors in question, they are 20" Samsung SyncMaster 2043nw's. I orignally only had one when I bought my computer, around the time when Samsung stopped selling the monitors. After almost two and a half years, I was able to find a second one through a online classified ad, and haven't looked back since purchasing it! The ability to have a website design open in Photoshop on one screen, while coding/developing that design into a theme on the other is something I can't imagine not having the ability to do. As always, feel free to let me know what you think. Any constructive criticism, critiques, or other suggestions are always welcome!

Lake of the Prairies Conservation District.mb.ca http://www.lpcd.mb.ca The Lake of the Prairies Conservation District was looking to have a complete overhaul done on their exisiting website.... Specifically, they were looking for a clean, modern, professional looking design for their sites visitors, as well as a simple, easy to use Content Management System to make content changes a breeze. A way to track how many visitors were frequenting their website at any given time, plus any other useful data (Internet connection speeds, geographical location, popular browsers, etc.) was also requested, all while staying affordable.
