Today was definitely not our usual Remembrance Day for branch no.264. However, we were still able to honor our Veterans, memories of their service, and what Remembrance Day means. As we’re sure you’re already aware, the COVID-19 pandemic has made it vital to limit social contact and avoid gathering. For that reason, we’ve made the difficult decision to be closed on Remembrance Day. While we know this is disappointing, we hope you can understand the steps we’re taking to help keep our Legion members, staff and attendees safe.... Dominion is encouraging everyone to stay home, stay safe and stay healthy. The Legion will offer a Facebook live presentation of the National Remembrance Day ceremony, and additional broadcast plans are under consideration.

Gary John Hurst 17 Aug 1944 - 26 July 2020 It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Gary Hurst in his 76th year.... Gary is survived by his loving wife, Norma, sons Lenny, Derek (Kelly) and Johnny; stepsons Robert (Bonnie), Michael, daughter-in-law Kim; grandchildren Gary (Hampton), Kyle, Natasha (Michael), Jacob, Karina, Kolten, Cody, Dakota and Dustin; three great grandchildren; sisters Gay and Linda and brothers Brian and Jeff. Predeceased by his parents Mae and Jack and his stepson Christopher. Gary served Canada as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces for 45 years, beginning with 1 Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada, then 3 Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry before remustering as a Finance Clerk. His regular force service took him from London Ontario to Calgary, to Cyprus twice and Egypt, to HMCS Qu’appelle in Victoria. From there he served in Borden, Petawawa, Gagetown and finally Ottawa before retiring to Edmonton and Calgary. Retirement did not mean hanging up the uniform. He became an active leader in the Cadet Instructor Corps guiding Army Cadets in Calgary and Vernon. He was also a leader in the Royal Canadian Legion, serving veterans and the community as the President of Branch 264 in North Calgary (Kensington). He is widely remembered as Papa Smurf by those that he taught and influenced and will always be remembered for his kindness and smile. In accordance with his and the family’s wishes, cremation has occurred and due to the current COVID19 restrictions a memorial service will be held at a future date.

Gary passed on Sunday morning. Our condolences and thoughts are with his family and friends in this time of sorrow. Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure. You are missed beyond words, and loved beyond measure.

We would like to give a special shout out to Al Seddon and Bob Mazury for their hard work in cleaning the parkade! They spent the better part of 2 weeks, first sweeping up the gravel and then pressure washing over 10,000 sq ft of parking space! As well, we would like to give a shout out to Diana Ratcliffe for weeding and cleaning up the flower beds to make the grounds look amazing! Great job everyone!

As many of you have probably seen, restaurants are being permitted to reopen Monday May 25 with limitations. These limitations include 50% capacity, tables no larger than 6 and no bar service (meaning no one is permitted to sit at the bar or approach a bartender for drinks). We have made the decision to reopen 1918 Tap & Table on Thursday May 28 with limited hours and a brand new menu. Hours will be increased as phases continue to roll out. Our new hours will be as follow...s: Monday - Friday 3pm - 8pm (happy hour 3pm - 6pm) Saturday/Sunday 10am - 8pm (brunch 10am - 1pm) The Lounge will continue to stay closed until further notice. Takeout and Delivery will continue to be available. We will be closed Tuesday & Wednesday prior to reopening. Takeout and Delivery will be available all weekend. However, we have made the decision to keep 1918 Tap & Table open for Delivery and Take-Out ONLY until further notice. The member's Lounge will continue to remain closed. There has been little guidelines and clarification for our industry... on reopening standards and as such several restaurants and retailers are going to remain closed until at least June 1. We are taking the reopening very seriously and several initiatives are being put in place prior to reopening. Face masks have been ordered for our staff, Plexiglas barriers are being installed and additional hand sanitizing stations have been ordered. The safety and wellbeing of our staff and patrons remain our top priority along with the longevity of our business. COMMUNITY UPDATES: 1918 Tap & Table has proudly partnered with Brown Bagging for Kids Calgary. Every day there are over 5000 kids in YYC who go without food. With the schools being closed the kids were unable to access this program until recently. Several communities are providing pop-up locations for kids to get lunches to which 1918 is proudly helping supply. As well families can also walk-in to 1918 and request a lunch. We are currently providing approximately 400 lunches a week with an additional 300 being added next week. We would like to extend our warmest wishes to you and your loved ones during this unusual time. It's important to reach out to others to feel connected. While we cannot open our doors, we can offer our thoughts and prayers for you and your loved ones well being. Please continue to safe, stay healthy and stay home.
