With the landing of NASA's Mars rover last week, we've had time to reflect on the future of space travel and how we as humans fit in to all that. As much as we look up with curiosity, we can't help but look down at our own blue planet and realize how much it needs our attention right now. Photo taken from our series Sacred Balance with David Suzuki, where he travels all over the world meeting people and learning how humans fit into the ecosystem of our great and mysterious earth.

Today we feature the first of many interactive projects Kensington has produced over the years. In 1997 - in the era of Web 1.0, many years before smartphones - Robert Lang travelled with Bruce Cockburn to the West African country of Mali to explore the ancient culture, popular music and struggles of Mali’s people with growing desertification. During the production of this doc, its companion website River of Sand Interactive provided a way for site visitors to ask questions of Bruce Cockburn and the rest of the film team. Every shooting day, after traversing the desert and jamming with Malian musical luminaries, the team checked in via satellite phone. (The site is still available below, with its 1990s-era web design) Visit site: https://kensingtontv.com/go/riverofsand/

Our #40thAnniversary celebrations continue with The Shadow of Gold. Made in association with TVO, Arte France, Canal D, Knowledge Network, and SVT, The Shadow of Gold takes an unflinching look at how the world’s favourite heavy metal is extracted from the earth. The film explores both sides of the industry: the big-time mining companies that dig deep and lop off mountaintops to extract gold from low-grade ore, and the small-time miners an estimated 20 million people in the world’s poorest nations who extract gold by hand, often producing just enough to survive. #TheShadowofGold

To find out, renowned sports scientist Steve Haake meets five top athletes, and challenges them to beat the world records of athletic legends while using old-school gear. The Equalizer was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award and won a Platinum REMI at Worldfest Houston.
