Random unsolicited story about the "Winchester Bombing Range" as an interesting story about a trail that Nation Valley ATV Club's trails run adjacent to. As to...ld by one of the club's past presidents. The Mountain Provincial Wildlife Area goes by many different names in our area, depending on what circles you run in. It's known by it's proper name by some, and others refer to it as the old bombing range, the Winchester Bog, the bog, the Mountain Bog, and various other variations. No matter what you call it, it is definitely a bog, The local snowmobile club's trail runs through this area when the ground is frozen, but even they have had a hard time using this area most years due to the unpredictability of the ice, even in the coldest Winters. Nation Valley ATV Club volunteers have attempted to make it from Armstrong road to Development road numerous times in the last 15 years to no avail. They work up the gumption to try about every 5 years or so. One of the interesting stories about the "Winchester Bombing Range" is that local talk at the old Liar's club, barbershop, or I guess now-a-days the Tim Hortons is that there is a tank out there from when the area was used for a bombing range back in the day. As the story goes the area was used during World War II to train allied pilots to fly. It was set up by the British Commonwealth Air Training program, and a tank was still in the bog, slowly sinking into oblivion. I myself might have been one of many persons intrigued by this story and interested in trying to find it (I never did, but the story always intrigued me). Back in 2011 or so, the "tank" which turned out to be a WW2 Staghound was located, and recovered by crane, front-end loader, and a troop of Dragooons from A Sqn, and the machine was taken to Petawawa where they were going on restoring the vehicle or use it for parts for another staghound they had there on the base. I never did follow up to see if anything has been done with the machine since its recovery in 2011, but was always a cool story about the "Winchester Bog" that Nation Valley ATV Club's trail runs adjacent to.
