Kingsway-Humber Kiwanis Club 10.01.2021

On Sunday, January 17th, MP for Etobicoke Centre, Yvan Baker, MP held his annual New Year's Levee to celebrate and welcome the new year. Mr. Baker also handed out his prestigious Community Recognition Awards, where he took the opportunity to recognize and thank the individuals and groups making a difference in our community. Kiwanis Club of Kingsway-Humber is very proud to announce that 4 of its members were honoured with an award! Peter Clarkson received an award for Out...standing Volunteer Service to the Community for his more than 40 years of dedicated service to the Kiwanis Music Festival. Gillian, Andre, Samantha and Lincoln of ‘Team Dugas’, three generations of the Dugas Family, received an award for Outstanding Volunteer Service to the Community for their efforts to prepare meals, pack backpacks, collect toiletries, deliver much needed clothing and food, and so much more, to women’s shelters and community partners. Congratulations to Peter, Gillian, Andre, Samantha, and Lincoln, for these much-deserved awards!

Since March, the GTA has seen a 3x increase in families visiting food banks, yet a 70% decrease in donations. President Stuart, Gabe and his family, Gillian & Andre, and Samantha & Lincoln, all shopped for and assembled 17 Christmas Food Hampers filled with staples such as pasta, tomato sauce, canned vegetables and fruit, cereals, canned meats, and soups, which we will be proudly delivering to women-led families in Women’s Habitat’s Outreach Program, as well as Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter Outreach Program!

Join us on Zoom at 12pm this Monday, November 2nd, to hear from our guest speaker, Keith Hoare, from Thistletown Collegiate Institute! Chef Keith is an award-winning teacher, culinary artist, and friend to the community. Since 2007, Chef Keith has led a project to provide Christmas dinner at local shelters, and in 2019 he worked with his students at Thistletown Collegiate Institute to expand the project to provide a monthly shelter dinner donation. This year, during the Covi...d-19 pandemic, Chef Keith prepared over 14,000 (and counting!) meals for shelters and food banks, and led an initiative to pick up surplus food that would otherwise be discarded, from culinary college programs, hotels, restaurants, and suppliers, and deliver them to the homeless and food insecure. We are looking forward to him talking about his partnership with our Club and how his talented students prepare filling and nutritious meals for the Good Shepherd Ministry.

In celebration of Kiwanis One Day which is held across the world on October 24th, our Kiwanis Club of Kingsway Humber members and family proudly came together to make 200 take away meals to provide to the Daily Food Outreach Program at Good Shepherd Ministry! President Stuart, Gabe and family, Gill & Andre, and Samantha & Lincoln shopped, prepared, sorted, bagged, labelled and delivered all the lunches to a central Kiwanian home where the Good Shepherd truck collected our don...ations. Each meal consisted of 2 sandwiches (bologna, turkey, ham, cheese, mayo, and lettuce), a piece of fruit, and a sweet treat. Along with the 200 full lunches, friends Anne, and Peter and family, also provided hundreds of slices of banana bread, chocolate chip cookies and additional fruit. Good Shepherd continues to feed between 800 and 1,100 daily meals from 2-4 p.m. to bridge both lunch and dinner. Like so many large outreach programs that are essential especially now during the Covid-19 pandemic, Good Shepherd Ministry has adjusted to allow for social distancing while keeping their clients - a.k.a. friends - supported with food and essential items.
