To help your body adjust to the new time, expose yourself to bright light first thing in the morning and avoid sleep in more than 30 minutes on Sunday morning.

It's Saturday and the time changes back to Daylight Saving Time tonight. My top tip for you is to put your child to bed at the regular time and then go to bed early, if you can.

We talk a lot about getting ready for the time change, but the truth is, if you do nothing, your body is likely to shift to the new time withing about 5 days. The start of Daylight Saving Time is a dream for parents, especially if you have an early riser! It's possible to keep your child on the old schedule by keeping it darker in the morning and exposing your little one to bright light in the daytime and especially before starting the bedtime routine.

Adult Sleep Tip: Do you like to get a little extra sleep on Sundays? You are not alone, but it is also common to experience what has been called 'Sunday Night Insomnia'. This is mainly due to a lack of sleep pressure from sleeping in on Sunday morning or taking a Sunday afternoon nap. If you can do these things without negative sleep consequences, then it is wonderful! If you are laying in bed trying to sleep at night, try a counting activity or playing Sudoku, to help you... focus and clear a busy mind, and see if that will help you fall asleep. So there is actually something to 'counting sheep' but it needs to be someone challenging, like counting by 3's or prime numbers for ward and backwards. Wishing you a happy, peaceful, restful Sunday! - - - - - #sleep #insomnia #parentlife

Are you feeling like cry-it-out (CIO) is your only option to get your child to sleep? There are other options! Jen Varela @sugarnightnight and Andrea Strang @kindersleep have written a book called Loved to Sleep because that is what you will be doing with this method, loving your baby to sleep! The Loved to Sleep Method is a nurturing strategy in which you invest your time to reduce the amount of crying and improve sleep. Essentially, you are trading tears for time. This m...ethod is designed to give you the tools to assess what is right for your family. Not every family has the same expectations or wants the same end result with regards to how and where their baby sleeps. The loved to Sleep strategy is the gentlest behavioural sleep strategy in my toolkit. Jen Varela and I wrote this book to provide a very gentle, responsive option to help babies and toddlers sleep better. With the Loved to Sleep strategy you invest more time and energy than some of the other strategies but you can nurture your little one to better sleep habits. If your child cries during this process, you can calm them right away. #lovedtosleep #gentlesleep #sugarnightnight ...#KinderSleep #attachedandsleeping #Gentlest #babysleep #apparent #attachmentparenting #nocio #nocrysleepsolution #attachmentparenting See more

Parent Question: Can you sleep train while bedsharing? Yes! I work with a fair number of bedsharing families, some want to continue bedsharing full or part-time, while others would like to their little ones to start sleeping in their own bed or crib. All of these scenarios can work for your family in getting better sleep. It’s NOT all or nothing you can have a child with a secure attachment who sleeps better while bedsharing OR sleeping on a separate surface.... If you decide your sleep goals can’t be met while bedsharing, then you may want to start with some small steps such as setting up you child’s new sleep location. That may be a crib or cot in your room or in your child’s nursery. It’s helpful to spend time playing and interacting in their room and bed in the daytime so your child can develop positive memories and feelings about their new sleep space. I also like to recommend using a soft crib sheet as you would an attachment object/lovey. Bring it into bed with you and use it for cuddling in the daytime. Then on your child’s first night in their new bed, they can have the sheet that feels and smells familiar, firmly on the mattress as a built-in, safe attachment object. #lovedtosleep #gentlesleep #KinderSleep #attachedandsleeping #baby #babysleep #apparent #attachmentparenting #bedsharing #breastsleeping #cosleeping #babysleeping #babysleepconsultant #gentlesleepcoach #gentleparenting #attachment #attachmentparenting

As I write this, my toddler is having a meltdown. It's a big one. Her emotions are big (bigger than my first's) - but like most toddlers. On a "good day" (or..., really, a good moment because parenting is truly a moment to moment experience - one moment you've got it, the next you feel rage you've never felt before), I can be present with her and work through them. But in tougher moments, they trigger me. And it's hard. When this community shares that parenting is hard, I often get messages from those wondering if they want to have kids. "Why would I want to have kids when so much changes?" "It doesn't sound fun. Why would we do it?" It's not always fun. It's incredibly hard. But there is also a lot of meaning. So I asked you. These are your words. It's important for us to see the hard - to talk about it, to normalize it, and to know that we are not alone. And, it's also important to remind ourselves what is meaningful about having children. Tell me below. What has parenting brought you? And check out my stories for YOUR responses.

It's Black Breastfeeding Week! This week is dedicated to bringing awareness to the disparity in breastfeeding rates and perinatal care that impacts black women, babies and families. Follow Babyem and ##BlackBreastfeedingWeek to learn more. "Black Lives Matter, from conception to birth, breast and beyond." "There is a proportionally higher risk to black women than white mothers during pregnancy and childbirth. The chance of death is 1 in 2,500 for black women according to the ...UK Confidential Enquiry into Maternal Deaths. This is purportedly a result of racial bias in the healthcare system that causes black women to be less likely to access adequate antenatal care, and more likely to suffer or find themselves, and their babies, at risk as a result. This extends to breastfeeding, too. In a 2019, a study by Beauregard et al found that: Black mothers disproportionately experience a number of barriers to breastfeeding, including lack of knowledge about breastfeeding; lack of peer, family, and social support; insufficient education and support from health care settings; and concerns about navigating breastfeeding and employment. Subjective norms, or perceptions of approval from others who are important to the person (e.g., family members), are important drivers of breastfeeding behaviors, particularly among black women. #BlackBreastfeedingWeek #ReviveRestoreReclaim #BlackWomenDoBreastfeed #Breastfeeding #BBW2020 #BlackMothers #BlackLivesMatter #BlackMoms #BlackMothersRock #BlackWomen #NursingMum #NursingMom #BreastfeedingMum #BreastfeedingMom #Nursing #Healthcare #Antiracism #Antiracist #MaternityNursing #Diversity #Equality

Do you need to have a strict schedule? Probably not. While some children have a temperament trait of high regularity, for most children doing naps and bedtime at the exact same time every day it not as important. Children’s development and daytime stimulation varies and this can result in their sleep needs fluctuating from day to day. We do however want to keep a fairly consistent body clock so some structure is helpful. It’s normal for babies and toddlers to wake up betwee...n 6am and 7:30am, start their first nap between 8am and 10am, and go to bed between 6pm and 8pm. It is also a good idea to prevent your child from getting overtired at bedtime as much as possible. Being overtired at bedtime can result in night wakings and early rising, that can ultimately impact their day sleep and their body clock.
