I completely disagree with the etiquette advice in this article. It is NOT good etiquette to ask your guests to bring their own utensils to your home. If you are concerned about contamination, provide high quality disposable cutlery and plates. It is NOT good etiquette to not allow your guests to use the bathroom at your home, even if you inform them in advance. If you are concerned about that for health reasons, then host your event at a public place with washroom facilities.... Like any other gift, gift cards can be presented with style and thought.

You may even suggest to the recipient something the card can be used for. #etiquette

Gift cards are treated like cash by some gift giving policies.

A secret santa giving $20 gift cards will be clearly upstaged by one giving $40. If you do plan to give a gift certificate at a group exchange, opt for the top limit amount.

Not everyone drinks coffee! Instead of those generic coffee shop or fast food gift cards, choose something the recipient will love.
