The photo below illustrates a successful hand ignition undertaken on the Tautri fire. The area in the far right of the photo was ignited the day before the phot...o was taken and is showing very little activity. The area in the middle of the photo was recently lit and the direction of smoke indicates the controlled burn is being successfully pulled into the main body of the fire. Controlled ignitions done under appropriate conditions eliminate fuel between a containment line and the main body of the fire in a controlled way, decreasing the chance of the fire burning up to the containment line in an uncontrolled way and crossing or spotting over the containment line. Controlled burning is one of the best tools the BCWS has to control the activity of fires.
