UPDATE: Nelson and area have experienced an intense windstorm event, with wind gusts continuing to cause hazardous conditions for residents and crews. There have been widespread power outages throughout the Nelson Hydro service area. There has been extensive damage to power lines and poles along with numerous trees down on roadways impacting powerlines and limiting access for repair crews. Highways and roadways have been heavily impacted with Highway 3A along the North Shor...e from Nelson experiencing serious blockages. At the time of this release, traffic is experiencing blockages near the Nasookin at 4 Mile heading east from Nelson along the North Shore. We advise motorists to check DriveBC for up-to-date information. Nelson Hydro has secured additional contract powerline technician crews, with additional crews arriving tomorrow. As well, City of Nelson arborists and contractors are currently clearing trees, so hydro crews can access damaged lines. Crews continue to assess and repair the damage. At this time, it appears repair work is likely to take a number of days to restore power to all customers. Nelson Hydro will provide an update tomorrow morning. For the most up to date road conditions, please visit DriveBC. **Please report any downed power lines to 1-877-324-9376. Downed lines can be very dangerous. Do not go within 10 metres of a downed power line.*** Photo credit: Stevland Ambrose
