Hi Friends! Kristin (from East Mill Physio) and Kayla (from @theathleteconnection) here! Throwin’ it back to some old college sports headshots. As former college athletes and now physios, we have teamed up to celebrate the upcoming National Girls and Women in Sports Day, on February 3rd!... We will be posting ALL week long (February 1st-7th) to celebrate and will be providing educational content to bring awareness to female athlete health and wellness. We will be sharing our own stories as female athletes, including some of the challenges and achievements we experienced in sports, as well as the stories of other female athletes to inspire the next generation all while bringing awareness to unique health and wellness considerations for girls and women in sports. On Monday, February 8th from 6-6:30pm EST we will be doing an IG live to discuss our experiences with sport, injury, rehab and to answer any questions! We look forward to celebrating with you! P.S. If you haven’t already signed up to receive my FREE e-book, The Female Athlete’s Guide to Lifelong Athleticism, now’s your chance. It will be sent out this Sunday, January 31st!

|SIX MONTHS| Today marks 6 months since I officially opened my doors to clients. I pulled a business and website together in 2 weeks with little time to perfect it in the way I would have wanted (1 year would have been more suited the the needs of my personality). My walls were bare and unpainted. I didn't have my furniture. I didn't know if I would have any clientsOh AND we were in the middle of a pandemic So I put my head down and got to work. I worked hard to clarify my... passion and the purpose of my work, and then got busy creating a place that was true to my values and positioned me to help clients in the way I best know how. And, somehow, 6 months have passed and things are starting to come together. My room is painted, I have furniture, I get to work with the most amazing clients and, most importantly, I am so filled up by my work. In just 6 months, I’ve been reconnected and made new connections. I’ve experienced the most overwhelming support and have faced the most disheartening adversity. So many lessons have been learned in such a short time and I am so extremely appreciative for everyone who has supported me through it all. Every suggestion, call, text, meeting, referral, like, comment and share is so appreciated. I couldn’t have made here without such a wonderful support system. It is all of you who motivate me to become the best practitioner I can be! I am excited to see what the next 6 months brings. I have some cool ideas in the works and I look forward to sharing them with you all. Thanks again for being here!

NEUROFUNCTIONAL ACUPUNCTURE: A specialized application of acupuncture used to stimulate the peripheral nervous system to evoke real-time changes in movement, function and symptoms. A key part of our Integrative Physiotherapy approach. Learn more about how Neurofunctional Acupuncture can be used to REHAB INJURY, MINIMIZE INJURY RISK and OPTIMIZE PERFORMANCE for sport or life. You don't need to be injured! https://www.eastmillphysio.ca/p/neurofunctional-acupuncture

Did you know that injuries leave behind signs? Sometimes these signs are obvious and apparent to you, in the form of pain, weakness or stiffness. But many times these signs are subtle. It might look like: --> a slight neuromotor inhibition (where you can't recruit a muscle in a full or controlled fashion) -->lingering sensitivity with touch or specific movements (healthy tissue doesn't hurt when you touch it!)... -->or a restriction in movement A trained practitioner can perform a physical assessment to help you identify areas of dysfunction and come up with a plan to restore function...even if your injury happened 20 years ago! Many of these dysfunctions can be treated with improvement seen in real time. Even if your old injury is asymptomatic, or if your new injury is "healing well", you need comprehensive treatment. Ignorance only leads to maladaptive changes and eventually, our body runs out of compensations and things will start to complain. Identify and address. While earlier intervention is better, it really is never too late. Let me know if you have any questions!

A little peak of the gym at Old Quarry Commons. I really lucked out that my new treatment room is right next to a private gym. Yay for silver linings! The extra space has been especially useful for assessing movement and prescribing individualized exercise programs to help clients achieve their health and performance goals.

I wrote this article as part of my application to the Master of Education program at Laurier earlier this year. It is full of great information about a topic that everyone should know about! It also highlights how, in the case of pain and nagging injuries, we can’t only blame the tissues. There are so many factors that contribute to pain and movement issues and it is a disservice to assume that these problems are always musculoskeletal. I love to spend time learning about these different physiological factors so that I can better help solve problems for clients. I hope you enjoy! Let me know what you think :) https://www.eastmillphysio.ca//a-hidden-detriment-to-healt
