Labour May Day Committee 29.04.2021

Part of our responsibility in the labour movement is to learn, support, defend and show up to the struggles of our brothers and sisters. Here's an event this Saturday we encourage everyone to attend - organized by Skyler Williams, a land defender at 1492 Land Back Lane and one of our speakers on May Day.

While the far-right organizes anti-mask rallies with a couple cops watching them, peaceful demonstrators against police brutality get harassed and arrested by hundreds of cops. Unions and the whole labour movement needs to get behind the #JusticeForEjaz movement right away!!

OSSTF District 12 activist Sara Vanz's work refusal is a bold example that puts her on the forefront of safety for workers and for people everywhere. So many of us face the same problems. Work refusals by her and by other teachers serve as a real inspiration for the labour movement to organize a mass response. Let's not leave them standing alone. Here the sister explains why she refused unsafe work- '...I'm a high school teacher in Toronto and I want you to know that our scho...ols are not safe. Even when we follow all the rules and we do our absolute best to follow every single safety protocol that we are given, we are still experiencing massive growth of Covid-19 in our schools, and it is impacting students and teachers, education workers and everybody else who is connected to the school system in some way, and the result is that we are literally walking into work not knowing whether we're going to get and potentially die from Covid-19 because this government has chosen not to take the steps it needs to take in order to keep our community safe, and I feel too like we are basically being given two choices: 'Either you comply and you toe the line and you walk into school and you just cross your fingers, follow all the rules, cross your fingers and you know it's not safe but you hope you get through the day and you don't get Covid-19 and nobody else does either, or else you chose not to comply. 'I chose not to comply. I invoked my legal right to refuse unsafe work, and if you don't feel safe that is something you have the legal right to do so as well'

Earlier this summer United Steelworkers activist Mark Austin and his partner Candice Zinkweg were attacked in their neighbourhood by men shouting racial slurs. The assault was brutal, and Candice was knocked unconscious. When the cops finally arrived they gave the racists a pass and treated Mark and Candice, an interracial couple, like they were the criminals. Trade unionists and others responded with a protest in front of the 55 Division. United Steelworkers Toronto Area Cou...ncil, the Black Action Defence Committee, the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, and Toronto East Anti-Hate Mobilization pulled together a good sized crowd (see article in comments). Now the attackers have been charged. This Saturday at 4:00 p.m. come join the rally to Take Back Dentonia Park. Looks like a relaxed, festive atmosphere with plenty of things to do. Labour May Day Committee activists will be there so be sure to stop by and say hi. Take a stand and make the neighbourhood a better place. Workers of the world and oppressed people unite -- sometimes it starts right in your backward

''Workers at a Starbucks drive-thru in Victoria, B.C., have voted overwhelmingly to join the United Steelworkers (USW) union, because they believe the best way to protect their health and safety on the job is through a union. '"We're sick of being paid minimum wage to work for a multi-billion-dollar company, being understaffed during a global pandemic, and we don't like decisions that directly affect our safety being made without us," said a Victoria Starbucks worker'

***English will follow the French*** Manifestation syndicale pour la Fête du travail - 7 septembre 2020 Nous sommes devant la pire crise économique depuis la Gr...ande Dépression. Already, the CAQ, this government of the bosses has demonstrated their intentions to make us pay for the crisis. It is time for the labour movement in Quebec to revive its rich combative traditions and prepare for the struggle. It is with this perspective in mind that we have taken the initiative to organize a big rally for Labour Day. We hope to make this an annual tradition. All unions and organizations that wish to revive the combative traditions of our movement are invited to endorse the demonstration and to attend in large numbers! The demonstration will be held under three slogans: DOWN WITH CAPITALISM! Capitalism is the profits of a minority before the needs of the majority. The bosses shelter themselves at home while the workers risk their lives on the front lines against COVID-19. It's austerity for the majority while the minority hides their wealth in tax havens. The union movement must oppose this system. FOR MILITANT TRADE UNIONISM! Historically, the labour movement has made gains when it has led a combative struggle against employers and their governments. We have gone on strike, have held general strikes and have defied unjust back-to-work legislation in the past. Without a fight, no gains are possible. This tradition must be revived. FOR A CLASS STRUGGLE AGAINST RACISM! Racism is a poison in our society. No worker earns anything when a co-worker is oppressed. We must use the methods of our class to fight racism - demonstrations, walkouts, strikes in solidarity with the victims of racism. Join the demonstration! When? Monday, September 7, 2020, 5pm Where?
