For clarification: Students in secondary schools who have chosen virtual learning have not been taken out of their timetables for the third and fourth quadmesters, so with the hybrid model they will be in most of the classes they originally chose regardless of whether they attend school in person or virtually. Classes have already been timetabled with the appropriate number of students; with hybrid learning, some students will be learning from home and some in person all ...experiencing the lesson live with an expert teacher. During quadmester one and two, students who chose to learn virtually were taken out of their chosen classes and were placed in courses we could offer virtually. Many students had to choose different courses than the ones they originally were scheduled to take, as some courses couldn’t be offered virtually due to lack of enrollment. With this model, students are going to be following their regular timetable in most cases. The daily schedule remains UNCHANGED - students who choose to attend in person will have in-school class in the morning, and virtual class in the afternoon, on a weekly rotating basis.

McKellar Park Central Public School got Dease Park into the holiday spirit on Thursday, December 17th by hanging handmade festive ornaments on spruce trees. The classes of the school took turns walking to the park in small groups and enjoyed the fresh air, sunshine and snow as the weather was impeccable for the outing. The trees and the craft supplies for the ornaments were donated by the City of Thunder Bay so that the students could personalize their neighbourhood greenspace. Thank you to the students for their holiday enthusiasm and to the City of Thunder Bay for their spirit of giving.

Dear Parents and Guardians of secondary students, After careful consideration, and in consultation with numerous school boards who have successfully implemented this new model across the province, a decision has been made to change the model for course delivery in our secondary schools. Beginning Monday, February 1st, classes will be taught in a HYBRID MODEL. A hybrid class is comprised of students attending class in person as well as students attending virtually. The two gr...oups of students are taught in unison by the same classroom teacher. For students continuing with in-person instruction, courses will continue to be taught in the same manner but will now include students joining virtually from home. These students attending virtually will receive the same live instruction in real-time as the in-person students are receiving. This hybrid model has numerous benefits, including: -Keeping virtual learners connected to their home school and with their peers. Previously virtual learners could have a timetable consisting of courses from all three secondary schools. -Offering a seamless transition from in person learning to virtual learning for students unable to attend due to self-isolation/illness. -Greater ability to offer a variety of courses. This is especially important for senior students who may need required courses for post-secondary programs. -The ability to pivot between provincially mandated virtual-only to a traditional day without changing student timetables. If parents/guardians wish to transition their child from in person to fully virtual learning or vice versa, they must still contact the school during the designated windows to do so. Please continue to monitor Edsby for more information, and note that while most classes will comprise of an in-person teacher with students attending both in person and virtually, some schools will have a few entirely virtual classes in order to accommodate if there is a larger number of virtual learners. TRANSITION DAY: As per the original school calendar posted in September, Wednesday, January 27th is a Professional Activity Day, and Thursday and Friday January 28th and 29th are designated fully virtual classes for the start of Quadmester three. In order to allow teachers to prepare to offer the best possible instruction and experience for students in the hybrid model, Friday January 29th will be designated a fully asynchronous activity day. Students will receive work from their teachers, but there will be no live instruction on that day. We look forward to successfully implementing this new model. Should you have any questions, please contact your school principal. Thank you for your ongoing cooperation.

How much does generosity weigh? That was Westmount Public School’s catchphrase for the last few weeks as the school’s classes teamed up to raise heavy amounts of coin to donate to the city’s well-respected Christmas Cheer Fund. The fundraising within schools got creative this year as the counting of cash was off limits to respect infection prevention and control measures. Westmount Public School decided to weigh its generosity and by the second week of December, the school ha...d collected nearly 100 pounds of coin. The coins reached a height of 429 cm when measured in graduated cylinders. Combined with the online and paper bill donations they received, the school will make a big difference for families this holiday season. With intense holiday spirit at Lakehead Public Schools, many schools pulled their weight to support the Christmas Cheer Fund in their own fashion. Kingsway Park Public School, Valley Central Public School and Crestview Public School, for example, kickstarted December with Spirit Week to ring in donations. Every day had a theme, such as hat day and plaid day. School administrators had a blast promoting Spirit Week to encourage donations to the point of spurring throw downs and Twitter rivalries! Woodcrest Public School sought to attract donations by tripling the incentive for their school community: 1. Supporting the Christmas Cheer Fund; 2. Partnering with a valued local business; 3. Relishing a delicious snack! The school partnered with The Sweet North Bakery to take orders for cinnamon and salted pretzels to be individually wrapped and delivered to the school for the students to enjoy. 100% of the proceeds from the sales went to Christmas Cheer. Thank you to all schools and families for participating in this year’s Christmas Cheer Fund. Happy holidays! #LPStb www.thunderbaychristmascheer.com The Sweet North Bakery

Superior CVI IB Programme Generates Major Post-Secondary Success A group of five Superior Collegiate and Vocational Institute IB Programme graduates of 2020 have won a prestigious award, the Digital Inclusion Challenge 2020. The challenge was open to technology leaders worldwide, welcoming an array of digital solutions relating to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #4: Quality Education. The former high school students, now attending McMaster University, Univers...ity of Waterloo, University of Toronto, and Queen’s University, had a limit of 10 days to conceptualize, design and develop their project. The team, called Superior Innovations, created the award-winning product Face to Face, a low-bandwidth video conferencing software created to improve virtual access to mental health services in remote northern communities. The group is now being pursued by universities and industry partners to advance the project. All five students attended Superior CVI’s International Baccalaureate Programme (IB Programme) and are now advancing academically at an accelerated speed among their pupils in their respective top-ranking universities. The IB Programme is offered in over 100 countries and designed for students who are looking for a challenge as they enter high school and an influential diploma as they graduate. The IB Programme curriculum consists of six subjects: Studies in Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, and the Arts. The IB Programme also employs three core elements proven to broaden students’ understandings and encourages tactical learning and skill development: 1. Theory of knowledge; 2. The extended essay; 3. Creativity, activity, and service. Upon graduation, the IB Diploma meets the highest standards required by any university in the world and graduates place themselves at an advantage as they enter university as a result of accustomation to the substantial demands of university. The IB Programme is open to all students in the world, regardless of elementary school. Lakehead Public Schools is proud to make the IB Programme available for its students. Congratulations to the five Superior CVI IB Programme graduates: Alexander Harris, attending McMaster University Harasees Singh, attending McMaster University Fuyang Deng, attending University of Waterloo Euan Pound, attending University of Toronto Amir-Ali Golrokhian-Sani, attending Queen’s University The group’s submission can be viewed here https://youtu.be/8lNgMEG49rk The Digital Inclusion Challenge details can be found here https://digitalinclusionchallenge.org/the-challenge https://www.lakeheadschools.ca/

Positive COVID-19 Case in Whitefish Valley Public School Community The Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) was notified that an individual associated with Whitefish Valley Public School has tested positive for COVID-19. The individual is currently at home and being followed by the TBDHU. The individual is not a student. Working closely with the school and with Lakehead Public Schools, the TBDHU initiated a comprehensive Public Health investigation of this case to assess ...possible exposures. Although the individual with COVID-19 was at school during the time they were infectious, the Whitefish Valley Public School students, staff and community are not at an elevated risk at this time. All students and staff can continue to attend school in-person. Students and staff should continue to use the provincial screening tool prior to attending school every day (https://covid-19.ontario.ca/school-screening/). The TBDHU, Whitefish Valley Public School and Lakehead Public Schools will continue to work together and monitor the situation for the next two weeks. Whitefish Valley Public School, like other schools in Lakehead Public Schools, has implemented significant measures to reduce the risk of spread of the COVID-19 virus within the school setting. Further information on the public health response to cases in a school setting can be found on the TBDHU website at www.TBDHU.com. Further information will be provided to the school community if required over the next two weeks.

Future Careers in the Making At Superior CVI, grade 12 Co-op student and aspiring social worker, Karlie Splett, is learning the ins and outs of her potential future career by visiting with Chartwell residents virtually. This opportunity was created for her and a classmate by Cooperative Education Teacher Mr. Slobojan, who opted for this clever solution thanks to the availability of technology for high school students at Lakehead Public Schools. The two virtual Co-op students ...visit virtually with Chartwell Thunder Bay and Chartwell Glacier Ridge residents four to six times per week, engaging them in conversation, taking notes, and afterwards reflecting on what they did well and how they can improve. Social workers improve the quality of life and well-being of people and assist them in the coping of new or difficult life situations, such as fighting an illness, living in poverty, and living with a disability. A major role of social workers is to identify individuals who may need help and reach out. Being a social worker requires extensive knowledge of human behaviour and development, as well as having empathy, compassion and the ability to solve problems. High school Co-op courses prove to be a significant determinant in the career choices of youths, providing them with a preview to their future, should they wish to follow that road. Mr. Slobojan is hoping to expand the virtual Co-op course to include more options for students in the next quadmester. Other Superior CVI Co-op students are learning the ropes within their anticipated fields of work the traditional fashion where COVID-19 related restrictions permit visitors, such as at law offices, pharmacies, beauty salons and veterinary clinics. Day in and day out, teachers continue to motivate students to find their drive in life, despite boundaries the year 2020 may have introduced. In doing so, teachers contribute to teaching not only the curriculum but also the feeling of ambition, accomplishments, and overcoming hindrances. Student Karlie Splett has been given the opportunity to feel what it’s like to converse as a social worker and may now be able to make further career choices more confidently. Amid the pandemic, the demand for assistance with mental health is on the rise. Depression and anxiety, among other mental health issues, are serious matters that should not be ignored. Thank you to social workers, and future social workers, for supporting community members in need through challenging times. Mental health resources for students, staff and families are available on the Lakehead Public Schools website at https://www.lakeheadschools.ca/mental-health-resources-for/. @superiorcollegiate

On November 2nd, Director of Education, Ian MacRae, accepted a donation for Whitefish Valley Public School. Every year for nearly 20 years, the local Staples Business Depot and the Kiwanis Club of Thunder Bay unite to raise funds for Lakehead Public Schools and the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board (@tbcdsb School) to offer one school from each board the chance to allocate extra capital to an area of their choice. This year, Lakehead Public Schools selected Whit...efish Valley Public School as the recipient of the $1,850 gift. Currently, Whitefish Valley Public School is exploring different ways to teach and learn outside, such as building an outdoor classroom or outdoor butterfly garden. The school’s aspiration is wonderful, and this donation may certainly assist them in reaching this goal. A big thank you to the local Staples Business Depot and the Kiwanis Club of Thunder Bay for their annual commitment to helping our schools. Thank you to TBCDSB for hosting the event! Fifth Graders Interview Bestselling Canadian Historical Fiction Author At Woodcrest Public School, Mrs. Liggins’ love for reading inspired a learning opportunity for her grade 5 class. Canadian bestselling historical fiction author, Genevieve Graham, made a virtual appearance in the class to participate in a one-hour interview by the fifth graders themselves. The activity was history based, as the author’s recent novel, The Forgotten Home Child, delivers a number of Canadia...n historical facts. The author’s passion in this novel is to communicate a lesser known part of Canadian history, that of the home children in the 19th century. The class learned about the home children in preparation for the interview and asked the author many interesting questions, including questions about being a novelist. When asked what inspired her to become an author, Graham answered that her love of reading did, but that in order to write her first book, she first had to overcome her fear of failure. She explained that the fear of underperforming held her back for a long time, until she resolved to write solely for herself. With her newfound confidence, the success of her first book ensued and seven books followed, with two more on the way for 2021 and 2022. Home children were children aged 5 to 17 from the United Kingdom who were sent, largely from 1869 to the 1930s, to other countries including Canada to serve and live with new families until they turned 21 years old. The author explained to the students that not all home children experienced hardship, but that many did. The students listened respectfully as the author touched on the difficult aspects of life in that era. The author believes it is a thought-provoking part of history that can be used to encourage conversations with family members about lineage. The author added that in her extensive research while writing the novel, she discovered that over four million people in Canada come from home children descent. A Glimpse of Thunder Bay's Past in Honour of Remembrance Day On November 10th, Woodcrest Public School’s Mrs. Clutchey prepared for Remembrance Day by inviting an Honorary Lieutenant Colonel of the Lake Superior Scottish Regiment to speak to her grade 6 class. Dr. Michel S. Beaulieu, who is also Associate Vice-Provost Academic and External Relations Associate at Lakehead University, painted a picture of Thunder Bay in the World War I and World War II eras, teaching the studen...ts the impact the people of Port Arthur and Fort William had on the wars. In addition to the thousands of people from the Thunder Bay area who enlisted to fight, ships were built at what is now Marina Park, and planes were built on the grounds of what is now Bombardier. In WWII, over 1 million Canadians served, with 709,000 serving in the Canadian Army and 250,000 serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force. During his presentation, Dr. Beaulieu voiced that some soldiers from Thunder Bay fought in every major battle of the six-year war. He provided the photo below which offers a rare glimpse of our local veterans fighting for peace in France in 1944. Dr. Beaulieu also brought a more recent perspective to the history lesson for the students by paying homage to three Thunder Bay soldiers who sacrificed their lives fighting for peace in the War in Afghanistan. All future history lessons, all mention of Canadian soldiers, together with the Lake Superior Scottish Regiment, will forever honour Corporal Boneca, Private Costall, and Private Klukie, alongside all veterans, through the symbolism of the poppy and the deepest recognition on Remembrance Day. The impression left on the history of the City of Thunder Bay from past and current wars is monumental and will remind us, every year, to pause and recognize those who have served for their country.

Woodcrest Student Wins Big in National Minecraft Competition In 2020, it’s known that having coding and computer skills will eventually pay off. For Lakehead Public Schools’ very own Woodcrest student, Alex Coghill, that day came at the young age of 11. In June, when Alex was in grade 6, he entered the Canadian Storytelling in Minecraft competition with the help of three Lakehead Public Schools teachers who were running the Minecraft club an extracurricular learning program... operating remotely during the pandemic and open to students JK to grade 8 within the school board. Alex entered the national competition with confidence and commitment and worked hard every day for three weeks. The results are in, and we are thrilled to announce that Alex won second place! This is a big win, as the contest received 75 submissions with over 100 participants from coast to coast. This competition was no easy feat. The Canadian Storytelling in Minecraft competition asked contestants to depict a Canadian historical event or location using Minecraft and include historical facts and appealing visual detail. Alex chose to tell the story of the fur trade in 19th century Canada featuring Fort William Historical Park. He built an incredibly detailed virtual replica of the Historical Park, including the Kaministiquia River, wooden palisade, historical buildings, and even voyageurs in action! Alex created a narrated Minecraft video of the simulated experience of a fur trading voyageur arriving at the Historical Park via canoe on the Kaministiquia River and navigating his way throughout the village. The video packs such tremendous historical information that it could easily double as an educational video. Well done, Alex! When the pandemic began last spring, teachers Mr. Magill (Claude E. Garton, grade 6/7), Mr. McCreery (C.D. Howe, grade 4/5) and Mr. Sandberg (McKellar Park, grade 6) created the Minecraft club to provide students with an extracurricular opportunity to set attainable objectives, be inventive, and engage with one another. Minecraft sparks resourcefulness in its players and inspires the drive to not only undertake a project, but to also persevere to its completion. Players plan and calculate individually or as part of a team and build impressive creations that often suggest little architects and engineers in the making. The Minecraft club was a huge hit with 20-50 students participating each day. The teachers were happy to hang on to the essential student-teacher connection during the pandemic and watch students thrive in a learning game they love. Alex and his Minecraft club comrades strengthened their computer skills and became more proficient in technology - knowledge they will likely use in their future careers. #LPStb #MinecraftEdu #BuildChampionship See more

McKenzie Public School Shines in Terry Fox School Run This year, the Terry Fox Foundation celebrated its 40th Anniversary of Terry’s Marathon of Hope. The special Terry Fox School Run challenge sparked the interest of many schools, in particular our very own McKenzie Public School which jumped at the opportunity to make a difference and raise funds for cancer research. The initiative was spearheaded by Mrs. Poling, the grade 1 teacher. The fundraising goal was $700 and the st...udents’ reward if they reached the goal, other than feeling a wholesome sense of pride and achievement, would be to have a large bucket of water dumped on three brave teachers and one daring vice-principal. With the sense of competition in the air, the students couldn’t help but be enlivened and run toward the opportunity. As the Terry Fox Foundation’s relation to Thunder Bay is so strong and unique, every class in McKenzie Public School was motivated to participated in this historical cause. The teachers played a central role in teaching the students about Terry Fox, perseverance, and courage. On September 30th, every class from JK to grade 6 took turns walking and running outside in the school yard for 15-30 minutes. The school not only met its fundraising goal of $700 but surpassed it, donating $970 to the Terry Fox Foundation’s much-needed cancer research. Congratulations to the students, teachers and administration of McKenzie Public School! The students reveled in watching Mrs. Poling (grade 1), Mrs. Armstrong (JK/SK), Mrs. Parker (grades 4-6), and Mrs. Gayoski-Luke (Vice-Principal) get a bucket of water dumped on each of them, all in the name of fun, encouragement, and history.

November 11th is the first of 3 set dates where secondary students can move between remote and in-person learning. Facilitating these moves is a complex process; please consider any moves carefully. Should you choose to have your child move from their current mode of delivery follow these steps: 1. Have a conversation with the school principal about the concerns you have with your child(ren)’s current situation and the reasons for wanting a change. Schools will work to provi...de solutions to concerns and barriers. 2. If, after those discussions, you still feel a change is preferred, speak to your school principal directly to request the change. These requests must be made between 9:30AM October 19th and 4PM on October 23rd. We are not able to honour requests made after October 23rd due to the impact of staffing changes in the system. 3. The principal will document the request, and during the week of Nov 2nd new staffing and timetabling will occur. 4. Your child will be contacted by their guidance counsellor to arrange the new timetable. Any questions can be addressed to your school principal or vice-principal.
