Have you ever wanted to join one of the sustainability walks we offer? Check out this video to see what it's about! Throughout 2020, members of the Thunder Bay Lake Superior Living Labs Network hub co-created the Sustainability Stories Video Series. Our goal was to use digital storytelling to highlight efforts, share learnings, and synthesize a place-responsive understanding of what Sustainability means here in the community of Thunder Bay and across the watershed as related to projects that our members and partners are engaged in. The videos were crafted to tell stories, prompt reflection and invite community participation. The videos also weave together some of the key themes of the LSLLN: relationships, collaboration, diversity, place, and just sustainabilities. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZ5MCTRl5VQ&feature=youtu.be

Another climate-related event for Research and Innovation Week scheduled tonight. The dual crises of climate change and chronic, or non-communicable, disease (NCD) have emerged worldwide as the global economy has industrialized over the past two centuries. In this synthesis I examine humans’ dependence on external (non-metabolic) energy expenditure (e.g., fire, fossil fuels) as a common, root cause in these modern crises. The human lineage has been dependent on external energ...y sources since the control of fire in the Paleolithic, and this reliance has grown with the development of agriculture, the use of wind- and water-power, and the most recently with industrialization and the transition to fossil fuels. Industrialization and mechanization, powered by fossil fuels, have promoted centralization and processing in food production, reduced physical activity, and increased air pollution (including greenhouse gas emissions). These developments have led in turn to NCD and climate change, which are thus connected both to one another and to our species’ deep evolutionary dependence on external energy. With the impending exhaustion of oil, coal, and natural gas reserves, developing replacements for fossil fuels is essential if we are to confront the dual crises of climate change and NCD and maintain our species’ external energy portfolio and way of life. Lakehead's Research and Innovation week starts in 6 days! The theme this year is Our Changing World, and there are lots of sustainability-related events lined up. "We've all heard the catch-phrases: In these unprecedented times, we are all in this together, to try to flatten the curve, while adjusting to a new normal. Our world is changing, but living through a global pandemic has radically changed so much of our daily lives. We look to scientists, political leaders, artists,... and intellectual thinkers for direction, as they work tirelessly to improve health and well-being, drive us toward social equity, and aid us in discerning fact from fiction. These are uncertain times, but as we pivot in these uncharted waters, we look to research and innovation to help us understand and appreciate this new world." https://pheedloop.com/lakeheadri/site/home/

Dr. Cheryl Lousley, Lakehead University Research Chair in Environmental Humanities, shares her archival research on the public hearings and back-room meetings of the World Commission on Environment and Development, whose 1987 report Our Common Future launched sustainable development. Meeting ID: 927 1...493 7345 Passcode: 453855 Guest Speaker: Bob Baxter, Martin Falls First Nation Residential School Survivor On September 30th, wear an orange shirt in the spirit of reconciliation and to honour Residential School survivors and all those impacted by Residential Schools. Orange Shirt Day is set aside to honour residential school survivors and all those impacted by Residential Schools. In the spirit of reconciliation, everyone is asked to wear an orange shirt on this day. The idea for this day came from Phyllis (Jack) Webstad’s story of having her new orange shirt taken away from her on her first day of Residential School. Today it’s an opportunity for communities to come together to re-affirm their commitment to reconciliation.
