Problem solved! The masks that our hard of hearing patients love on us are now also available for you too! If you are a communication partner of someone with hearing loss, wearing a clear mask gives them access to additional visual cues to aid in conversation. These masks are $15 and available in three different colours (black, blue and sage) at our Lake Country and Kelowna clinics. Call today to reserve yours!
We are taking a break from our clear masks today and work tomorrow to show our support for our Veteran’s. If you can, please donate to your local @royalcanadianlegion Kelowna Royal Canadian Legion Branch 26 ... #lestweforget#remembranceday#poppyfund
To conclude our posts for #nationalaudiologyawarenessmonth, we wanted to geek out with you on how incredible our hearing organ is. See the snail-like part of this diagram? That is our cochlea! Except, in actuality, the human cochlea is only 9 millimeters around (take a moment to think about that) and can instantly discriminate between 20,000 frequencies while also determining the volume of an incoming sound. Wow! This can give us some insight as to why we say 'hearing AIDS'.... As fast as technology is advancing, no amplification systems are mimicking the level of sophistication we see with the cochlea. This is good to keep in mind while communicating with someone wearing a hearing aid; although their hearing is likely improved, it is not perfect. Good communication strategies will always help hard-of-hearing individuals (hearing aids or not). #audiology #audiologist #hearingorgan #cochlea See more
We wanted to take a moment to really appreciate that we live in a place with an Early Hearing Program (EHP). British Columbia implemented the EHP 2007 and was one of the first provinces to do so. Prior to implementation, children who were born deaf or hard of hearing were often not identified until 2 years of age and this had impacts on many aspects of their development. Now, children born with hearing loss are typically diagnosed by 3 months and fit with hearing aids by 6 months. Early diagnosis has significantly reduced unnecessary developmental delays as a result of a congenital hearing loss. Thank you to our Audiologists and Hearing Technicians in our public health care system who are providing this early diagnosis and management for our little ones! #audiology #audiologist #nationalaudiologyawarenessmonth #newbornhearingscreening
Our balance is a function we all take for granted when it is working the way it should. However, if our balance system has been impacted by injury, disease, or aging, vestibular dysfunction can occur. The balance system is made up of your inner ear, your eyes, and your brain. Symptoms of balance disorders can vary greatly. ... If you experience: dizziness, vertigo, a tendency to want to check the ground when walking, feel like you are on a boat, difficulty transitioning between walking surfaces, or difficulty walking in the dark... then you are likely a candidate for a diagnostic vestibular assessment with our Vestibular Audiology team. Call our clinic to learn more today. #audiology #audiologist #vestibular #balance #dizziness #nationalaudiologyawarenesssmonth
How loud is too loud? Protecting the hearing we have is SO important, especially in the noisy world we live in. Use this quick reference guide put out by the American Academy of Audiology to determine more situations where you could be wearing ear protection. Common concerns from patients: 1) Traditional ear plugs from the store just fall out. Solution: Visit our clinic to have custom fit ear protection to fit your ears perfectly! 2) Because I already have hearing loss, whe...n I wear hearing protection, I actually can't hear anything and I need to be able to communicate! Solution: Electronic Hearing Protection (EHP). Call our clinic today to learn more about options surrounding EHP. . #nationalaudiologyawarenessmonth #hearingprotection #earprotection #audiology #audiologist See more
October is National Audiology Awareness Month and we are heading into the final week! We will be sharing daily posts this week to help educate our community on various elements that fall into our scope of practice. To start off, we wanted to answer a frequent question that we receive: What is an audiologist anyways?! #audiology #audiologist #nationalaudiologyawarenessmonth #hearing #tinnitus #vestibular #hyperacusis #auditoryprocessingdisorder #hearingaids
LEGO - which began in 1947, has just released their first minifigure with a hearing aid to reduce the stigma for children who wear hearing aids. Good job, LEGO! http://bricksfanz.com/lego-minifigures-continues-to-expand/
Last week was Balance Awareness Week and one of our patient's offered to share her personal story of how she learned she was experiencing Vestibular Migraines. See the link attached. Michelle had NO headache associated with her migraines. Rather: fuzzy vision, loss of speech, and dizziness. After working with our experienced team of Vestibular Audiologists, Michelle is managing her migraines much more successfully.... Thank you for sharing your story, Michelle! https://lakesidehearing.com/dizzy-spells/
American Sign Language (ASL) is gaining its deserved recognition with the frequent COVID-19 updates. The friendly face of Nigel Howard, who we all recognize from TV, has previously taught an ASL course at UBC; however students could not gain any class credits towards their degrees. UBC is now recognizing the ASL course as any other language course and students will obtain full credits upon completion.

As you may have seen from our previous posts: masks act as an additional communication barrier for individuals who are hard of hearing. Signia Hearing has just launched additional support for hearing aid users in their app which helps boost speech clarity while listening to people wearing masks. If you have the latest Signia X hearing aid, simply tap the masked face in the app to get crisper/clearer sounds from your communication partner. Thanks, Signia!
Wearing masks may pose challenges for individuals with behind-the-ear hearing aids. To improve comfort/prevent loss, Oticon has shared some useful hints and tricks to make it more manageable! If none of these work for you, we encourage you to be extra careful when removing masks from your face. To avoid tangling your hearing aids in the ear loops: 1) pull the loops backwards off the ear first 2) and then pull the loops outwards around the ear and the mask forward off your face. As the world changes around us, we will continue to face new learning curves. Our team is here to help you adapt :)
Do you suffer from bothersome tinnitus and/or sound intolerance? We are excited to offer our very first VIRTUAL support group on July 29. Call one of our locations today to reserve your spot, as spaces are limited. We will ‘see you’ soon!
We are proud to be a supporter of the Walk for Guide Dogs. This year, the walks were held virtually - Kelowna's took place on May 31, 2020. At our clinic, we have been able to witness first hand the positive impact that guide dogs have on the lives of individuals with profound hearing loss. Let's work together to help the LFC Dog Guides reach their goal of $325,000 this year! Training a guide dog takes a long time. This fundraiser allows for more deserving individuals to get a guide dog trained for their specific needs.
Masks may be the ‘new norm’, but it is important to us to maintain good communication strategies with our hard of hearing patients. Did you know 40% of the sounds in the English language can be seen while watching a speakers’ mouth?
