Join celebrated local artist Amy Dyck for an in-depth lesson in structural portraits. Time will be spent focusing on the features of the face and how those features fit into the overall structure of the portrait. We will also pay attention to the structure of the face to understand how it creates planes of light and shadow as the form shifts away from the light. This class will take place in-person and online simultaneously so the choice is yours! Click on the link for more info and to Register! https://www.tickettailor.com/even/langleyartscouncil/506799

About the Call: This exhibition was created to provide a safe space and platform for specific voices of those whom we, perhaps, don't hear from as often as we should. The Beyond Barriers call is created specifically to allow BC artists who identify as having a disability or being differently-abled (currently or recently, permanently or temporarily) to showcase their work, without any of the labels you may have acquired over the years. The type of difference is not important, ...and all are welcome regardless of whether your situation is obvious to those around you (visible) or not (invisible). Although we are inviting artists who identify in this way, the show is NOT about this identity, it is about moving past these barriers into whatever is important to you, and about remembering everyone's wholeness in spite of obstacles. The LAC welcomes all perspectives, and all subject matter is welcome. For more information about the call and how to apply. Visit https://www.langleyarts.ca/submit/beyond

'There is a folder of photos in my phone titled "potential paintings", full of a combination of my own photos and pictures I come across online. I was looking for inspiration and came across a beautiful photo of the Northern Lights I had previously saved, taken by photographer Even Tryggstrand, I was immediately drawn to the stunning glow and incredible vibrancy of the colors and decided to try and capture it with my acrylic painting. Aurora Aglow is my second ever attempt at... a landscape painting on canvas and I am so excited to share it!' - Cierra Van Nes talking about her work 'Arora Aglow'. Beautiful work Cierra! Is there a budding young artists in your home? Encourage them to showcase their work through our social media! All they have to do is email your works image and title to [email protected] or send it to us over direct message... more features to come! See more

"This set of drawings was created for Advanced drawing 2400 at KPU during the final semester I took in order to get a certificate in Fine Arts. The entire semester was online and I never met any of my classmates or professors in person. For our second project of the semester we were asked to do to self portraits that reflected the world in some way. I found that working alone without going into the studio once a week changed the way I make art. The things I created this seme...ster were very different from previous semesters and arguably far more interesting. In the first drawing we were required to do a black and white drawing with one colour. This drawing is titled "What is human is 2020?" Drawn with a variety of materiel including pencil, charcoal, and pencil crayon; the beginning of the process involved self portraiture photography and a little bit of photoshop and manipulation. The final image depicts myself in a tiny space with objects crammed in with me, and a person on a bunk above me hanging down into my space. It's supposed to feel quite uncomfortable, kind of like how many of us have felt this past year. So cut off and isolated, yet so crammed in. The green was intentional, I picked green to symbolize sickness and how near it always seems to feel now. We as humans in the past year have changed how we live, and with the rise of artificial intelligence, questions of mortality and evolution, and this new lifestyle we've all taken on of staying inside and communicating via computers and phones; it can all leave us asking, what is human?" - Makayla Goldsmith on her work 'What is human in 2020?' This post is a part of the LAC's Youth Feature! Are you a young artist who is interested in being featured on our social media? Let us know! Submit your artwork to us by Direct message or email them to us at [email protected]! all artistic mediums welcome!
