This week we want to continue to highlight local immigrant owned businesses by highlighting Salvadorian Flavour. <3 Salvadorian Flavour is owned by a mother ...and daughter- Marcela and Olga Lopez who are originally from El Salvador and came to Canada in 2018 with their family. During their time in El Salvador they had their own restaurant but the situation in El Salvador was getting increasingly dangerous. With the threats of gangs to their daughter’s life and demands for money happening continuously, the situation was becoming too dangerous for them to continue. Olga Lopez decided it was no longer safe for her daughters and she bravely decided to move to Mexico and then eventually to Canada. Moving to Canada was challenging because of the language barrier. The family did not speak English and they said it was frustrating to not be able to fully express themselves to others. This caused Olga to believe it would not be possible to have her dream again of her own restaurant in Canada. Marcela and her sister were determined to support their mother and continued to encourage her not to give up on her dreams. They all became very determined and learned English and took different trainings on how to have a business. In January 2020, they were finally able to start their dream in Canada and opened their business selling traditional food from El Salvador and Mexico. Olga says the best part about having her own business is that it is her own. When you work in a restaurant you are restricted to cook what they sell, how they tell you to cook things. Having your own business, you can cook and do everything you want or can imagine! She loves the freedom to be creative with food and she also dreams of expanding her business because she wants to provide more jobs to other people one day. Marcela says her favourite part about running the business with her mom was the fact she was able to support her mom to accomplish her dreams. Everyone in the family supported this to be possible determined to make it happen. They work together as a family and it is truly a family business. Working together makes us strong, Marcela said. When their business opened, they sold food at ISANS and at the Seaport Market but because of COVID-19 they had to stop. It was so frustrating, Marcela explained about COVID-19's impact. With the help of a special kitchen and support from friends they were able to shift their business to offer deliveries and orders for customers. This is a really hard time, Marcela explained, because they do not have a physical space yet to sell their food and because of the added challenges of starting a new business during COVID-19. They are looking for a space and hope that they will be able to open a physical location again but for now they are still offering food orders and delivery. Marcela and Olga believe they are bringing some unique flavours to Halifax. It is a way to share their culture and make people happy and connect over food. Olga said she sells Mexican food too because she has many Mexican friends as well. Olga believes that many people stop making their cultural food when they come to Canada and she hopes that her restaurant is not just about bringing that taste of home back into people’s lives but also to inspire them to start cooking it again too in their own homes. <3 When asked if there were any final messages to share Olga had one thing to say: Please come taste my food and I really hope you enjoy it! Marcela said This is a different kind of food my mom is cooking because she is cooking it with her whole heart. When you come, you will experience that. If you want to try Olga and Marcela’s delicious food and support a local immigrant-owned family business, please order from Salvadorian Flavour <3 You can find them on Facebook or by clicking here: cutt.ly/Salvadorian-Flavour or email Marcela at: [email protected] #immigrantowned #LocalHalifax #halifaxlocal #HalifaxResteraunt #ImmigrationMatters #NewNovaScotians #localbusiness #NovaScotiabusiness #shoplocalhalifax #supportlocalbusiness #Immigrantownedbusiness **Photos submitted by Marcela and Olga ** Interview translated by Marcela <3
