M A G N E S I U M This mighty mineral is involved in over 300 different chemical reactions in the body. As Naturopathic Doctors it is common for us to prescribe magnesium supplements to our patients. Here is a list of just a few of the reasons we may include magnesium in your treatment plan:... It supports energy and mood It helps regulate stress hormones It can regulate bowel movements It can help with insulin and glucose metabolism It helps to lower blood pressure It reduces muscle tension and pain It improves sleep It improves menstrual cramping It can prevent migraines There are a number of different forms of magnesium including oxide, citrate, malate, glycinate and threonate. Each form of magnesium has different conditions it may help treat better than other forms. As always, we recommend discussing the form and dosing you should be taking with your naturopathic doctor as each person has individual needs.
Dr. Amelia snapped this photo of some cherry blossoms on her run this morning. Spring is near!!
Today Dr. Andrea is not only sharing a super cute photo of her baby boy, but she is sharing one of her favourite recipes to share with patients. The Life-Changing Loaf of Bread from @mynewroots I often discuss with my patients the importance of protein with each meal, especially in the morning, to help support our health throughout the day. Protein is not only essential for our survival, but eating protein with each meal helps ensure that the carbohydrates that we eat with i...t are digested slower in the gut. Slower breakdown of carbohydrates results in less blood sugar spikes throughout the day, which ultimately helps to curb your cravings, reduce stress, and improves your mood, energy and even sleep! Balancing blood sugars also can help prevent a number of chronic illnesses, including Diabetes. This recipe enables you to have your comforting 'toast' in the morning, while you can feel good about supporting your blood sugar balance and overall health! The beneficial bacteria in your gut will also be happy from all the fiber contained in this bread. It combines well with avocado, nut butter or an egg This bread is rich in: Protein Fiber Omegas Vitamin & minerals Now that's a loaf of bread, no wonder it's called the life changing loaf of bread! The recipe can be found at https://www.mynewroots.org//the-life-changing-loaf-of-bre/
This amazing restaurant is providing affordable and healthy meals to those in need here in Victoria. See the post below taken from Red Cedar’s website to learn more about them. ... The Red Cedar Cafe is a not-for-profit community meal program, fueled by volunteers and mutual aid to provide healthy, tasty, affordable meals to seniors, people in self-isolation and other people in need in Lekwungen and WSANEC territory (Victoria, BC). Meals are provided on a "pay what you can" basis, supported by donations from suppliers and the general public to cover costs. Priority is given to senior citizens, people with disabilities, people in self-isolation, people caring for a person who is ill, people living in poverty, people who have experienced income loss as a result of Covid-19 and essential services workers. https://www.redcedarcafe.ca/
Turns out your mom was right when she said to eat your fruit and veggies! WHY? They contain a variety of nutrients necessary for your body to function, and are particularly rich in Vitamin C. Vitamin C is an ESSENTIAL vitamin, meaning we cannot synthesize it ourselves and must obtain it from our diet on a daily basis.... Although not to the extent that it causes scurvy, vitamin C deficiency is still prevalent around the world, even in more developed countries. This is due to diet, geography (ie. pollution, seasons, etc) and various health aspects such as smoking, various forms of stress, obesity, acute and chronic infections, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. What do these all have in common? Increased oxidative stress! Vitamin C: Supports our immunity by stimulating the activity of white blood cells Is a major antioxidant throughout the body, aka helps neutralize and protect against damaging molecules ('free radicals') Ensures healthy epithelial tissue (think skin, blood vessels, intestinal lining..) to protect from pathogens entering, or from oxidative damage from external sources such as pollutants/smoke and internal sources such as diet/stress Supports adrenal function (think energy, mood) in the production of stress hormones, and thus especially helpful for physical and psychological stress. Now you know more about vitamin C, should you supplement? The best way to obtain nutrients typically is from a whole foods diet. There are times when the body requires higher levels of certain nutrients, and in the case of vitamin C it's most often in states of high oxidative stress. If you have any of the conditions above, or just looking to support your immune system, extra vitamin C is likely a great option for you. Talk to your naturopathic doctor about the appropriate type and dose for you! Want to read more about Vitamin C? Another good article on physical distancing during COVID. https://www.bmj.com/content/bmj/370/bmj.m3223.full.pdf
Good study on Vitamin D and COVID 19 https://reader.elsevier.com/reader/sd/pii/S0960076020302764
It is uncanny how similarly borrelia and COVID 19 affect the immune system.
A good reminder that we still need caution.
A very well rounded article. https://apple.news/AyVdiIk1NSSesSNINkfp8fA
Keep up the good work people. It is so relieving to see that all of our efforts might be paying off.
