Have you been in a traditional Latin American Market? This was shared by a friend of ours from Vercruz, about six hours by bus towards east of Mexico City . Mexican markets are usually a warm gathering place. A place to come by to shop, eat fresh food, meet friends, grab a treat, or sip some coffee with friends. Vendors are local, often women. You can get some of the best authentic mexican dishes in the local markets which are hard to find in busy touristy places. Covid d...efinitely took a toll on the local markets and the economy. Meet Natalia, Paraiso’s Senior Manager for the last three years, who has mainly been supervising our southside location. She gives us more insight into her work, her migration story, and fave shows & snacks! What are some of your job responsibilities? I do a little bit of everything. Opening and closing the store; when we receive shipments, I’m the person in charge of receiving those shipments, checking that we’ve received the products in good shape. Also, I do updates o...f the prices in our systems. Everything that’s in the back office, I manage that. I also give customer service, so it’s a little bit of multitasking." You have a bit of an interesting backstory you were born in the U.S. + grew up in El Salvador ? "Yeah. My parents are originally from El Salvador , and they were refugees going to the States. They lived in Los Angeles when I was born, and they were also helping people that were refugees from El Salvador because there was a civil war there in the 80s [to] come to Canada. So they said ‘Hey, why don’t we try this: come to Canada?’ and that’s how we ended up here, and we lived in Saskatoon for about 12 years. Then the civil war ended, and my parents wanted to go back to El Salvador and see family and everything just to visit. But we ended up staying there for more than 20 years. And then about three years ago, we decided as a family to all come together to Canada, and we came to Edmonton." Currently, what are your Top 3 TV or Netflix shows to watch? "Schitt’s Creek is a great, and it’s a Canadian series. That one is at the top. The Queen’s Gambit is really good that’s a series. I just saw it. It’s excellent. And Bridgerton it’s reaaaally good. So I love to see series. They're all on Netflix." What food do you normally snack on while you’re watching these? "Any type of chocolate. From here, I like getting the Nachos Don Pancho the Delicioso Foods salsas either chipotle or guacamole and that’s what [my family & I] dip [the nachos] in." At Paraiso South, we marinate the carnitas with oranges and Coca-Cola, then slowly bake them with salt & the marinade, so it comes out super juicy & flavourful, shares Paraiso co-owner/manager Bruna. At the north store, we slowly bake the carnitas with salt only. With the weather being so cold out these days , now is the perfect time to make some sweets + comfort food! We have many Colombian flours (harinas colombianas) to make natilla custard or pan de yuca. Our ready-made Natilla Colombiana mix can be used to make natilla, which, in Colombia, is traditionally eaten around Christmastime.
