How to Think About Goals/Resolutions for 2021 First let me just say I FULLY understand the temptation to go all in on resolutions. You have goals.. You may be disenchanted with how you’ve let a few things slide. You want this new you and you want it yesterday. Can I ask you to hit the pause button? Just for a few minutes. ... I feel like there’s a different way to approach the resolutions this time around. One that will negate the need to hit the reset button every year with the same mentality and system. Here are a few thoughts/encouragements - not so much about what to do, but HOW to look at your journey forward. The only choice we have is to begin. And the only place to begin is where we are. Simply begin. But begin. - Seth Godin: The Practice. Begin and keep beginning. Instead of trying to think your way into the right action, ACT your way into the right thinking. You already know enough. Take a deliberate and unapologetic step. Outcome goals are great, but vastly incomplete and without substance. Wanting to drop 30lbs is awesome.. But shift your focus far away from the outcome and put ALL OF IT into systems.. Processes.. The fundamental habits that will beget your outcome goals. Grocery shop regularly so you can eat at home more. Show up at the gym (whether an actual gym or a room in your house that becomes your gym or the outdoors). Go to bed earlier so you can prepare meals, spend less time scrolling and netflixing so you create time for grocery shopping, meal prep and workouts. Work on eroding the root causes of your struggles. I’ll say this bluntly.. The very LAST thing you need to do right now is a cleanse/detox/fad diet. Instead, aim to eat more vegetables, learn to not judge your food choices, work on a healthy relationship with food, exercise and self. Find ways to move more and lift.. Learn how to cook healthier foods. Your success will come in cues, context and proximity - not willpower. Put resources into designing your life in such a way where healthy living becomes easier to accomplish. By all means write your goals down.. But don’t just write them on a piece of paper or a google doc. Write down when you want to accomplish the goal, what obstacles you will face, how you will overcome said obstacles and what people/resources you will need. Finally, write down 20 reasons why you will accomplish your goals. Is this an easy exercise? Not really. But this will absolutely give you the awareness and direction you need. <3
