Black paint is a favourite in the studio but be careful that you don’t assume what it represents for people using it. Many think black is emotionally dark, unhappy or morbid. For me black brings space, peace and calm. It’s a starting point. It’s infinity. Stay curious and ask questions before making any assumptions or sharing concerning reactions. If you’ve got a proper professional art therapist guiding the client, you don’t need to be afraid of any themes coming out via the... art. This week a client was opening a canvas package that held 2 and asked me if I was going to use one. I was caught of guard as I usually work in my collage book (a place of comfort) while older clients are working away on their pieces. This invitation reminded me that the studio is a place to play. I took her prompt and ended up with Anne. I’ve been watching the series Anne With an e and it’s so beautifully artistic, imaginative and hopeful. From The Tragically Hip theme song..., to the imagery created for the intro, to the fantastic acting and storytelling. This uplifting character has crept into my heart, once again and I’m grateful to an insightful client keeping me on my toes in order to create the unexpected. *Please share! I’m still puttering away in my altered collage book. It’s been with me since I opened my first student art studio, through hundreds upon hundreds of my student training hours, from Toronto to Orillia, to my first professional art therapy studio. Hundreds upon hundreds of hours. This means that it has been in my hands for 5 years. It has been present for so much and has helped me to model therapeutic creativity.
