Core vocabulary has proven to be a very useful tool in therapy for low/non-verbal students. In typical language therapy with pre-schoolers, I love using books! It’s age-appropriate, motivating, language-rich, and enjoyable. Whenever I read any book, I target the core words ‘open’ as in ‘open the book,’ ‘turn’ as in turn the page, ‘read’, ‘look’, and ‘finished/all done.’... Below are some suggestions of core words to target with common books: Where’s Spot? - look, open, yes, no, eat, under, behind, in, up Dear Zoo: open, yes, no, big, little, happy, want Goodnight Gorilla: open, in, out, bye, good, sleep, up, walk Blue Hat Green Hat: not, it, that, wrong, there Brown Bear, Brown Bear: I, me, see, look, do, you #corevocabulary #slpeeps #slpblogger #speechtherapy #schoolslp #instaslp #slpontpt #teacherspayteachers #tpt #elslp #preschoolslp #middleschoolslp #ashaigers #speechpathology #therapyroom #therapymaterials #speechie #slp #speced #weteachspeced #preschool #preschooltherapist #letscommunicate See more

DID YOU KNOW Did you know that masks reduce your ability to understand what is being said to you by 20% to 30%?! Masks reduce your ability to hear high frequency sounds, aka consonants, which transmit the majority of the meaning in speech. In addition, a significant amount of communication is non-verbal. Gestures and facial expressions, alone, can express your wants, needs, and feelings. Now pair this with physical distancing, and you’re in for a one taxing conversat...ion... During these uncertain times, we should continue to be mindful that there is an entire community that rely solely on gestures, facial expressions, and lip reading to communicate. With masks being mandatory, I’ve been rocking this mask every chance I get! I love hearing people tell me my smile and the ability to see my lips has (a) made them smile, (b) reduced their stress, and (c) made it easier to understand me - all while following government guidelines See more

Tropical Telephones . . . These phone-like devices provide children with auditory feedback, which allows them to hear themselves and make adjustments to fluency, pronunciation of speech sounds, and even increase comprehension. Individuals with auditory processing disorder, stuttering, and dyslexia have also seen remarkable benefits from the auditory feedback process of listening to themselves read aloud. ... BOOKS . . As Speech Language Pathologists, we cannot stress enough the importance of reading books to your child. Reading helps build communication skills like auditory comprehension, expressive vocabulary, and memory, all done with natural 1:1 interaction. . . But my child hates books! He pushes them away or screams when I take them out. I can’t get my child to attend long enough to a book. Yes, it can be difficult getting a busy, energetic child to sit down to read a ...book or enticing a child with a language delay to engage with a book, especially if it’s something they find difficult. . . That is why I love making these velcro adaptive books! My younger kiddos love them. They’ll sit through the entire story, engaged, waiting their turn to match each picture. I noticed that my students are able to better respond to wh questions after the story. I even have some students that will ask to play the teacher role and ask the other group members wh questions while retelling the story from the pictures! See more
