Today is the third anniversary of Humboldt Broncos bus crash that injured 13 players and claimed the lives of 16 others, including Logan Boulet. Logan’s decision to register as an organ donor improved the lives of 6 strangers and inspired thousands to register as organ donors. The Logan Boulet Award, presented by Canadian Blood Services, is awarded to champions of organ and tissue donation and is proudly displayed at the Logan Boulet Arena in Lethbridge, Alta. ... #TogetherStrong #LoganBouletEffect #GreenShirtDay #CanadasLifeline #OrgansTissuesForLife

There is no suggestion or evidence in the research available that donating blood reduces the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine. There is also no deferral period for donors who received a COVID-19 vaccine. Check your eligibility and book an appointment anytime at blood.ca

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) is a longtime participant in the Partners for Life program, promoting the importance of donating blood through social media and hosting a variety of on-site events. As an organization of first responders, VPD has a special interest in the annual Sirens for Life campaign, which always draws a large number of employee donors. John-Derrick’s need for blood inspired a long-distance friendship that spanned from Florida to Newfoundland. There is not one day that goes by we don’t think about her and everything she has done for our baby. I truly believe that our paths were meant to cross. Anna Patten, John-Derrick’s mom. Here's how you can help: When a person is infected with a virus, their body starts making antibodies to fight it. It is believed that these antibodies could be the key ingredient for a treatment to help others with the same virus. We are part of national clinical trials currently testing if the antibodies circulating in a recent COVID-19 survivor’s plasma (called convalescent plasma) is an effective treatment option for patients with COVID-19. If you recently recovered from COVID-19, you can help by donating plasma. Sign up to participate at http://ow.ly/ISLB50CppIT.

Plasma donors are an interesting group. They seem to be motivated by the same kinds of things as other donorsbut often, there’s more going on. My mission is to help gain a deeper, more nuanced understanding of plasma donors, so that we can continue to do the work of providing lifesaving products. Medical sociologist Dr. Kelly Holloway recently joined Canadian Blood Services, thanks to the generous support of financial donors. ... Through her research, she’s striving to better understand the motivations of plasma donors, to help strengthen collections and meet patient needs. Are you on the stem cell registry? Let us know you’re truly prepared to donate. Many potential donors decline to proceed with lifesaving donation when asked.... Currently, when potential donors on the registry are contacted to donate stem cells for a patient, only about 50 per cent of them follow through, says Dr. Heidi Elmoazzen, director of stem cells at Canadian Blood Services. ... We’re especially interested in male donors between the ages of 17 and 35, because cells from those donors tend to result in better outcomes for patients, says Dr. Elmoazzen. Also, because of Canada’s changing demographics, we need donors from all ancestral backgrounds to provide matches for patients. Being able to reach a potential donor is essential to the timeliness of the donation process for a patient in critical need of a stem cell transplant You can update your contact information anytime by calling 1 888 236 6283 (1 888 2 DONATE). We urge healthy Canadians between 17 and 35 years of age to join Canadian Blood Services Stem Cell Registry online and order their swab kit to be delivered in the mail. Current registrants who no longer wish to be considered as a potential stem cell donor can have their status updated to no longer committed in the registry. This change is not permanent. At any time, registrants can change their status to yes, committed, or update their contact information, by calling 1 888 236 6283 (1 888 2 DONATE). Dr. Heidi Elmoazzen is the director of stem cells at Canadian Blood Services. Learn More: http://ow.ly/2Nxw50Col5W

Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency (HRFE) continues to increase the support it provides to Canadian Blood Services. Much of the credit goes to current captain Annette Thompson, hired as a firefighter in 2007. I’ve donated blood most of my life, says Annette. When I joined the team, I started encouraging others to donate. Our line of work gives us a special appreciation for the importance of donating and of registering as an organ donor. First responders often feel helples...s after loading someone into an ambulance. Donating blood is a great way to help. In 2013, the first year HRFE participated in the Partners for Life Program, it collected 32 units of whole blood; last year, it collected 317 units. It also organized several events to raise funds and awareness. People from across the organization now participate, says Annette, not only first responders, but also administrators and support staff. It generates a lot of camaraderie. Rhonda Dawes saw a story on Global News in 2017 about a man willing to donate his kidney to a complete stranger. She was inspired by the man’s willingness to help someone he didn’t even know. After listening to it, I just said, ‘I want to do that too!' Dawes said. She signed up to be a living donor, opting to give her kidney to someone she would never meet. ... http://ow.ly/1Cn650Cok9R #OrgansTissuesForLife Via Global News

Donation 32 today! Today's donation is for a dear colleague whose father, husband, and a friend are all battling cancer. You think you've had a crappy 2020? Think again when you have your health and home. Many people with cancer require blood or platelet transfusions, and the need for blood does NOT stop during COVID or Christmas. Do something to serve someone else this week, whether friend, family, client or stranger. Send a food delivery, drop off a favorite drink, mail ...a card, email an e-book, order a magazine subscription, pray, give to the food bank, call a friend, clear a sidewalk, say thank you, leave a 30% tip, bake treats, message me about giving blood. Service is simple, don't wait for the perfect time - there are no perfect servants, just start. #repost @lakeviewaquaticconsultnts #thankyou #blooddonor #canadabloodservices #blooddonation #canadaslifeline #calgary #yyc #blood #donor #lakeviewaquaticconsultnts
