spotLIGHTS February 1-7th is Eating Disorder Awareness Week. To honour this, our dear friend has shared a small snippet of her long journey with ED and her hope to shine light on ED and promote body positivity. (TRIGGER WARNING : This post discusses eating disorders and diet culture)... I had recovered from bulimia, then developed orthorexia and it was glamorized and applauded in the wellness industry. I was applauded for my thin body and looked at as a role model. I was starving myself with keto and diets and got very sick when it all caught up to me. We need access to proper eating disorder recovery resources. The "help" we get are in the wellness community and most of the time they are promoting disordered eating and disordered exercise mentality. For example burning off your food and calories and earning your meals which is a form of bulimia and purging. We need Dieticians who are trained in Eating Disorder and use a healthy at every size (HAES) approach. We need doctors, nurses and clinicians who are trained to help us. We need trauma therapists who are trained specifically to help us. Diet culture and trauma for most of us are the root causes of the illness. We need support groups that are run by qualified professionals who won't cause harm. Why people should give a shit? Your wife might be hiding an eating disorder (my hubby didn't know for 6 years he had no idea). Your child, your friend, your teacher, your nurses, your doctor, your brother, your neighbour, maybe even your best friend(mine had no idea). This illness thrives in secrecy, it's not safe to come out because we get made fun of and mocked. I remeber a whole room of people making fun of a friend who was "puking at work" these women were laughing at her behind her back. People think it's a choice, it's not. You know lots of body builder men struggle with bulimia. Fitness models etc. It actually takes more lives than any other mental illness . I don't want to pass down diet culture to my child. Fuck that. Little girls and boys aren't born hating their bodies. Eventually I want to do workshops with teens, parents etc and look forward to spread more awareness surrounding eating disorders. To everyone out there struggling I would say breaking away from the family legacy of body hatred and diet culture may be the hardest and most essential work we do - A
