Will I Bruise? Bruising and swelling are common risks when considering Lip Injections due to the vascularity of the tissue.... However, as an Injector there are a few tricks I use to decrease the possibility of bruising such as technique, needle size, and speed of delivery. But despite my best efforts, bruising and swelling can still happen. Here are some ways YOU can decrease the chances of bruising and swelling when having a Lip Enhancement. BEFORE TREATMENT Avoid alcohol, aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (ibuprofens such as Advil or Motrin), St. John’s wort or high doses of vitamin E supplements 24-48 hours prior to injections. These agents may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site. Talk with your healthcare professional if you have previously suffered from facial cold sores. AFTER TREATMENT Use cold compresses to reduce swelling. Avoid exposure to intense heat (sun lamp or sunbathing, saunas or hot tubs) or cold (direct ice to skin). Reduce the risk of facial cold sore recurrence that could be caused by needle punctures. Talk with your healthcare professional about medications that may minimize the likelihood of an outbreak. Avoid alcohol, aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (ibuprofen such as Advil or Motrin), St. John’s wort or high doses of vitamin E supplements for 24-48 hours after injections. These agents may increase delayed onset of bruising. Avoid lip plumping agents for 7 -14 days after treatment or until any bruising or swelling has subsided. After treatment, you might have some swelling, redness, pain, bruising, tenderness, lump formation, or itching at the injection site.These are typically mild in severity and normally last less than 1418 days in lips. Swelling may be more likely in patients under 36 years, and bruising may be more likely in patients over 35 years.
