The Wellness Wheel illustrates a wellness model with seven dimensions: emotional, intellectual, physical, social, environmental, financial, and spiritual. All of the dimensions are interconnected and important to a well-rounded and balanced lifestyle. Over the next several weeks we are going to look at each dimension - starting with: Emotional wellness is all about your feelings and emotions. Are you able to understand your feelings? Are you able to express them? How do yo...u take care of and manage your feelings? This dimension of wellness highlights the importance of recognizing your emotions and accepting them as they come. Having strong emotional wellness can help you better adapt to change and cope with stress. Below are some questions and statements that can help you gauge how you are doing in the emotional dimension. - I recognize my feelings and am able to express them appropriately. - Can I recognize stressors in my life and know how to deal with them? - I am able to comfort myself when I am feeling troubled or stressed. - Do I consider myself to be an emotionally stable person? - Do I engage in relaxation and stress management techniques? - I am able to adapt or adjust to change without stress or worry. #WellnessWednesday #LITFirstAidandLifeguardTraining #selfcare #wellnesswheel

Carbon monoxide gas is a simple molecule: one part carbon and one part oxygen. Carbon monoxide comes when carbon fuellike wood, gasoline, coal, propane, natural gas, and heating oilfails to burn completely. These energy sources aren’t dangerous when you burn them in an open area with plenty of ventilation. But carbon monoxide is hazardous in confined spaceslike basements, kitchens, garages, or campers. Carbon monoxide is hard to detect without a sensor, which is one of the... reasons it’s so dangerous. No matter what type of carbon monoxide detection you have, it’s a good idea to conduct regular maintenance: - Test it frequently using the button on the front (once a month) - Replace the batteries as often as the instructions recommend. - If you have a wired sensor with a battery back-up, make sure both power sources are working. - Replace the sensor every few years according to manufacturer guidelines (these sensors don’t last forever). #TipTuesday #LITFirstAidandLifeguardTraining #carbonmonoxideawareness #carbonmonoxidedetector #carbonmonoxidetesting

Newton's Laws of Swimming The first law outlines the concept of inertia. It says that things stay still or move steadily (at the same speed) unless something pushes or pulls them (unless some kind of a force is applied). The second and third laws are of more interest. The second law explains the connection between force and acceleration: if you push or pull something, it starts moving (if it was still to begin with) or goes faster (if it was moving already); the bigger the fo...rce you apply, the more acceleration you get; the longer you apply the force, the bigger the change in momentum you can achieve. Where swimming is concerned, the third law is perhaps the most important. It says that when you apply a force to an object, the object returns the favour and applies an equal force to youin the opposite direction. This law is often called action and reaction and it's the simplest way for a scientific non-swimmer to make sense of the water. You probably know already that if you kick backward against the wall of a swimming pool, you shoot forward through the water. The same applies to actual swimming strokes. Simply speaking, if you want to swim forward through water, you have to pull water backward with your hands. If you want your body to stay up, floating on the surface, you need to kick down with your legs. If you're swimming along and you want to stop suddenly and stand up, you can pull your hands down in front of you (in a kind of circular motiona bit like bowing down) and your legs will swing down behind you, so you land in an upright position on your feet. Master these basic movessimple applications of Newton's third lawand you'll find you'll be able to swim easily and stop confidently whenever you need to. #SundaySwim #LITFirstAidandLifeguardTraining #watersafety #swimmingtips #newtonslawofmotion #getmoving

Psychological First Aid training allows individuals to build a self-care plan through understanding and identifying how loss, grief, and stress affect them and in turn how to deal with it. This training also explores how they can care for others by identifying what it looks like when their friend or loved one is experiencing distress. The program focuses on four components including: look, listen, link and live. This means awareness that there is a problem, listening to you...rself or others, and linking to resources in your community so that you can live fully. As summer turns to fall, it's a good idea to refresh your memory on fall fire safety tips. Some safety tips are the same regardless of the time of year, but many safety concerns are seasonal, particularly those that involve keeping your home warm. Central Heating System Safety Tips -Get your central heating system cleaned, inspected and serviced by a certified HVAC (heating, venting and air conditioning) contractor every year before using it. -If you have a gas heater, m...ake sure that you have a sufficient quantity of fully functioning carbon monoxide detectors installed in your home. Space Heater Safety Tips -Make sure that any space heaters are surrounded by at least three feet of empty space. -Never place clothing or any other objects on a space heater to dry. -Do not place space heaters near furniture or drapery. -Turn space heaters off when you leave the house or go to bed. -Avoid storing any combustible items near heaters. Fireplace Safety Tips -Get your chimney inspected each year to make sure that it is safe. -Hire a chimney sweep to clean out your chimney every fall. -Repair any cracks in fireplaces. -Use fireplace screens to keep sparks and fire debris inside the fireplace. -Do not every use gasoline to start a fire in the fireplace. -Never leave a fire unattended. -Make sure that combustible materials are not stored within three feet of your fireplace. -For natural gas fireplaces, get all connections and lines inspected before use each season. -Remember that outdoor fireplaces can be just as dangerous as indoor units, and observe all safety precautions when using them. Fire Safety Tips for Holiday Decorations -Do not use candles in Halloween jack-o-lanterns. Flashlights are much safer. -Make sure that children's costumes are made with fire retardant materials. #tiptuesday #litfirstaidandlifeguardtraining #firesafety #besafe #firesafetytips #firstaid #cpr #firstaidtraining #homesafety #savealife

Nearly one third of all water-related deaths take place while boating. That’s a huge amount, and unfortunately, many of these losses could be prevented by following just a few basic boating safety principles. 1. Get trained and certified In Canada, anyone operating a motorized boat must hold a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC). More than 70% of boating incidents are due to operational errors, many of which could be avoided with proper training. Taking additional swimming a...nd boating lessons can also reduce the likelihood of drowning, injuries, and other accidents. 2. Always wear a life jacket We know you’ve probably heard this little rule a thousand times, but it’s still worth another shout. The majority of those who die in boating deaths were not wearing a personal flotation device or life jacket. Wearing one might feel cumbersome, but it can make the difference between staying alive and becoming a statistic. 3. Pay attention to weather Before you head out, make sure to check your local weather forecast for any severe conditions throughout the day. Look around. Near or distant dark clouds, strong and chaotic winds, and sudden temperature drops are all signs to be aware of. Know what’s coming before heading onto the water. 4. Avoid alcohol According to the Lifesaving Society, roughly 40% of drowning fatalities from recreational boating in Canada are alcohol-related. You wouldn’t drink and drive a motor vehicle, would you? Driving a motorboat under the influence carries similar risks. Impaired vision and decision-making coupled with a fast, heavy, and potentially dangerous vehicle is never a good idea. 5. Mind your health Boating can be a strenuous pastime, especially when you’re spending all day in the hot sun. Make sure you bring plenty of water to stay hydrated, wear protective clothing, and don’t push yourself past your limit. #SundaySwim #litfirstaidandlifeguardtraining #watersafety #boatsafety #openwater #drowningispreventable

Benjamin Franklin was an avid swimmer from a very young age. Throughout his life he consistently promoted its healthful benefits. At the ripe old age of 11 he invented a pair of swim fins. However, unlike today's foot flippers, these were attached to one's hands. His advocacy for swimming was recognized by his induction into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1968. Franklin wrote, in March 1773: When a youth, I made two oval pallets, each about ten inches long, and si...x broad, with a hole for the thumb, in order to retain it fast in the palm of my hand. They much resembled a painter's pallets. In swimming I pushed the edges of these forward, and I struck the water with their flat surfaces as I drew them back. I remember I swam faster by means of these pallets, but they fatigued my wrists. I also fitted to the soles of my feet a kind of sandals, but I was not satisfied with them, because I observed that the stroke is partly given by the inside of the feet and the ankles, and not entirely with the soles of the feet. #TriviaThursday #LITFirstAidandLifeguardTraining #swimfins #handpaddles #benfranklin #swimming #invention

Autumn boating accidents are far more likely to be fatal than those that occur during the summer months. Although there are many more boating accidents in the summer season, boaters involved in accidents during the fall months are exposed to cold water and other weather hazards. Keep these tips in mind for safe autumn boating. Be Prepared for Changing Weather Since fall weather can change quickly, you should always be prepared for possible cold, windy, and wet weather ev...en if the sun is shining. Stay closer to shore, so you can turn back if the weather changes. Bring appropriate clothing, such as warm coats, rain gear, and gloves. Watch for Signs of Hypothermia Small open boats combined with cold, wet weather can lead to possible hypothermia. Some signs and symptoms to look out for: - Shivering or trembling - General lack of coordination, including stumbling and dropping things - Drowsiness, confusion, and apathy - Mumbling and slurring of words - Weak pulse and shallow breathing Tell Others About Your Trip Make sure you tell a friend or family member your boating plan and your expected return time. There are fewer boaters in the fall to help in the case of an accident or emergency. Always Wear Life Jackets Wearing your life jacket, while always a smart move, is even more important in the fall. If you should accidentally fall overboard, the cold water will quickly drain away your strength. #SafetySaturday #litfirstaidandlifeguardtraining #boating #watersafety #openwater #openwatersafety #safetytips #besafe #drowningispreventable
