Usually at the end of the year, I like to think back on all the accomplishments and the goals achieved. This year I am being thankful that we survived one hell of a year. Thankful and humbled. Humbled by the lessons. Humbled by the learning and growth, and re-growth some more. Humbled by the changes.... Humbled by the fear. Humbled by the pressure. Humbled by the quiet of a year that held so many at bay. Humbled by the vulnerability and uncertainty. Humbled by the empathy throughout the human population. Humbled by the movements that happened this year for equality and justice. Humbled by the connection of humankind. We all will take lessons away from 2020, big and small. Perhaps the need for us to all slow down and be kind to ourselves. Or to take much less for granted - like hugs and embraces. To focus on self care, and really looking inwards on what we need to be the best versions of ourselves. Perhaps to believe that everything truly does happen for a reason. Perhaps we will take away some of these lessons, and many more, but I hope that together we can remember that 2020 changed us. Every fibre of what we have known. We are surviving through a pandemic. So no, I did not do all I had set out to do this year (not even close), but I learned a lot in the process. I have hope for the years to come, for the world to return to some sense of normalcy. Cause I Gotta have faith, as George Michael said. I thank all of those who worked on the frontlines, I thank all of those who funded and researched tirelessly for a vaccine, and I thank those who made sacrifices this year to keep those around them safe. I also want to send my love to all small businesses, in all fields, who have struggled this year. Struggled to keep up with ever-changing requirements and protocols, who struggled to pay rent and stay open. I see you, and I’m here to support you. Times are tough, but there are blue skies ahead. Cheers to a year the world will never forget, and for making it out in one piece.

Each year on December 1st, I get the opportunity to look back at another year in business and be so grateful for another trip around the sun with Little Bird - an idea that started as a dream. Year Four! How the heck are we already here?! Was this year easy? Heck no. Hardest yet? Absolutely.... We moved 23 weddings this year. We revamped 10 full weddings, multiple times. And yet, there is so much to be grateful for. The commitment of our couples - we can’t thank you enough. I know this year has been so trying on all engaged couples, and having you continue to put your trust in us, means everything. We are always here to support you! To the team, thank you for being patient and flexible - two things that really sum up 2020. And for working so hard to bring 10 beautiful weddings to life this year. To my fellow vendors, thank you. For the referrals, the support, and honestly having someone to talk to throughout this year. I know this year has been a doozy, a real big one, but watching businesses pivot, change direction, modify and still create magic has been amazing to watch. I raise my glass to you today as well! And my favourite part about December 1st - knowing that tomorrow we kick off another year of our 12 Days of Little Bird Cheer. I cannot wait to share what’s to come, because it’s so good!! Windsor-Essex, you are full of so much greatness - I can’t wait to share some of it with you all, starting tomorrow! Photo: Vicki Bartel Photography

Melancholy feelings today thinking back to big rooms, filled with so many wonderful and warm faces. Something we took for granted - how simple it was to pack a room, share and pass food, and LOTS of hugs. These feelings come in waves - sadness, anger, fear. The world has changed so much in the past few months. Those things we once took for granted (like those full rooms of smiling faces - no masks), I find myself grieving for. I think it’s OK to mourn some of the world that s...tarted 2020, but also be thankful for our health and safety. It’s ok to feel sad. It’s ok to feel anxious. It’s ok to feel. It’s also more than ok to ask for help. Now, more than ever, talking to others, talking to professionals, is so important. Mental Health is critical and taking care of ourselves and our minds should be our main priority. Just wanted to send a little reminder today that it is ok to feel. There are A LOT of emotions swarming around this pandemic, and having someone to talk to or reach out to, is more important than ever.

Silken & Jon were two of the sweetest people we have ever met, and their wedding day was all about who they are as a couple. Kind, warm, inviting and a whole lot of fun. After many revamps of the original plan, their October celebration was nothing short of spectacular. What all boho dreams are made of, I would say! Photo: @nicolevallancephotography

I will love you as long as the sun burns in the sky, as long as the moon shines it’s light into the dark night, Until the raging blue oceans become calm and run dry. I will love you until the end of time.... -Christy Ann Martine Photo: @manifesto_photography

As much as I am loving smaller and more intimate weddings, I will say I do miss seeing a full room of guests hugging and gathering. There is something electric about that energy, and I hope we can soon feel that electricity again! In the meantime, we will enjoy and bask in the beauty from a little further away, and give lots of air hugs! Photo: @ninadesignphotography

Ive been doing a lot of thinking lately. Thinking about this changing world, and the resilience we all have to adapt and change throughout this pandemic. Its truly something to think back to February when 2020 had a very different look than it does today. But I want to raise a glass (or mug) on this Friday morning to all of the business owners who have adapted and changed their business models to make this new normal work. I know it has not been easy, and there have been ma...ny obstacles standing in the way throughout the last few months, but the resilience of entrepreneurship is something I have always admired. When faced with challenges, it is how we rise to the occasion that really will allow us to expand and grow. Will there be more challenging times ahead? Absolutely. New waters to tread? 100%. But Im watching as businesses around us are picking themselves right back up and prospering. So Im making a virtual toast this morning to all small businesses - run by individuals and families who are chasing dreams, making ends meet even in the toughest of times, and showing resilience beyond measure. Im so proud to watch your businesses grow and thrive, especially in the face of a global pandemic.

Its time to get extra creative with weddings, and Im all about the ideas Im hearing. With dancing off-limits in Phase Three, how do you keep the party going a little longer into the evening? We started compiling a little list of options to keep the party going! Acoustic Music/Performance to allow guests to still sit and enjoy the music, without dancing... Stargazing - move the party outside for the evening - provide something blankets and bug spray and watch the stars on your magical night. Social distancing of course between blankets Bonfire with all the fixings! Did someone say Smores?! Story Time! With less guests, this may provide an opportunity for guests to give their best wishes and share a few stories (and laughs) about your relationship. Many couples are also having their dinner start a little later, to prolong their evening more. Instead of a 5:30 dinner, many are opting for closer to 7 or 7:30PM. Photo: @vickibartelphotographer

Fridays look very different these days. Typically they would be filled with loading the car, preparing the Emergency Kit, and lots of last minute check-ins. Today, the pace is a little slower, but just as much excitement. Im packing the car for a very special shoot this weekend that I cant wait to share more of. Happy Friday!... I have been at a loss for words this past week. Its not that the words dont form, but how do you articulate them to encompass all of the emotions we are feeling. How do we say we are sorry, as white privileged Individuals, for 400 years of oppression and inequality? There has been sadness - how can this still be happening? How is the world still standing on archaic principles and not finding its short-comings. There has been anger - anger with myself for not doing more. Ang...er with the world itself for continuing to allow this type of conduct within society. There has been outrage - watching the news has brought me to tears on more times than I can count - how are innocent lives being taken for no other reason than the colour of their skin tone? How have governments, officials, and law enforcement allowed this behaviour to be tolerated? And then there is the guilt. White privilege. Two words that I never really thought too much about until this week. And shame on me for that. I am sorry, to all of my coloured friends, colleagues and community - for not using my voice for better. For not having a largely diverse portfolio, and for not thinking about it more. I have a lot to learn, and will continue doing so - this is not a learning experience that ends now. This is only the beginning, and scratching of the surface. I promise to continue to do the work, educate myself, continue to donate and support the Black community in any and all ways I can. Now more than ever we need to be allies, use our voices and platforms to let the voices be heard for all. Photo: @jessicaruxtonphotography Model: @pianobybethany

I miss these moments more than I can explain. I miss watching the warm embrace of loved ones, the smiles through the crowd during a wedding toast, and the feeling of love that filled the ceremony location as the couple said I Do. I will never take a single moment like this for granted after all of this is over, and we can fill ALL the rooms with love and laughter. Photo: @emmadavidsonphoto

Ive been quiet on here for a bit now, and Im sure you can understand why. I have honestly not felt right posting about beautiful moments from the past few years. Because I know so many couples are facing so much right now, when it comes to postponing and uncertainty. And we are here for you. We have been in talks with our couples for all of the coming few months about whats to come, what the next steps should be, and trying to navigate this minefield of uncertainty with th...em. Ill be honest. Personally, I have been kind of comatose - stuck in this strange space of emotions. It comes in phases - first it was the naivety of the situation, then the denial of what could be happening, and then came the worst feelings - anxiety, stress, sadness and fear - feelings we all have likely felt. My brain is programmed to go into Emergency Mode - something I have used on many occasions in this industry, but my instincts have been failing me in the last week or so. I have become consumed by all these emotions, and I feel as though I am not alone. Mental health is crucial at this time - reach out to those family and friends for support. From a distance of course! But today I woke up with a revived feeling of hope. This feeling too may come in waves, but I feel its important to ride the wave today - to feel optimistic, and forever grateful for the incredible Front Line workers who continue to put themselves in danger, for our protection. And it is our job to stay home, flatten the curve, and work towards a better tomorrow for all of us. I am thinking of you all, optimistic for the future, and taking it day by day. I know we can weather this storm, and love will not fail. Love is one of those magical things - it binds us together in all of lifes moments, including tough times such as these. : @wrenphotolab

Have you selected your Getting Ready Location already, if you are getting married this year? Here are a few things to keep in mind if looking for a space for you and your gals to get ready. Lots of Windows and Natural Light - not only will this help with photographs, but also for Hair & Makeup Something with a little extra space - it can be a hectic morning, so leaving some extra space (or a designated area) for Hair & Makeup to setup, away from food and drinks is always a ...smart idea Somewhere that is easy to find and accessible. This helps ensure efficiency in your wedding party and vendors to find the location. Plus, parking is key! How many cars will be staying overnight? A kitchen! If you can find a getting ready location with a kitchen, especially a full-sized fridge, it is so helpful. Keep lots of water and snacks on hand for while you are getting ready. Windsor-Essex has so many incredible Airbnbs, cottages and rentals available if you are looking for an adorable spot to get ready. Photo: @erynsheaphoto

What do guests remember most at a wedding? Food, Drinks and Atmosphere are typically the top three remembered. Food plays a huge role for many - and this leaves room for so much creativity! I always love when couples are open to trying new things with their menus, and always encourage the menu to be a true representation of the couple. This menu from Rachel & Austins Big Day, still is one of my favourite wedding meals to date! Oxley Estate Winery took their vision of Break...fast for Dinner and concocted the most perfect menu. Drinks are important! People enjoy coming to an open bar, and indulging for the evening. Signature Drinks can be a huge hit as well. And finally, atmosphere. This includes the music, and the overall mood/tone for the event. Was the dance floor full? Was the band phenomenal? People come to party, and providing guests with an amazing atmosphere is sure to leave them remembering your Big Day! : @vickibartelphotographer

Tis the Season to be Married (and engaged)! Did you know that a current statistic states that 40% of couples will get engaged between Christmas and Valentines Day? Thats a very large statistic, and also so exciting! Something about this time of year screams romance - maybe between the twinkle lights, families coming together and a chance to enjoy some quality time together, there is certainly some magic there! Just a reminder that we are almost fully booked for 2020 and booking fast for 2021, if you or anyone you know may be on the hunt for wedding planning services. Today, Little Bird celebrates 3 Years of Business (where the heck has time gone?!), and this year has been filled with so many wonderful moments, I am forever grateful. To all of our couples this year, thank you for trusting us with your Big Day - 22 weddings under our belt this year was a dream come true. To the entire Little Bird team, thank you! For the long days, the tireless emails, and for believing in this dream. I couldnt do it without you!... To the endless support of so many of you wonderful vendors, who continue to push me to be the best version I can be, personally and professionally. And to my support system, I couldnt do it without you! You know who you are, and I love you. To think three years ago, that I would have an amazing team beside me, a business I love showing up for, and the ability to have turned my dream into a reality, it is proof that if you manifest these things in your life - anything is possible! I say it time and time again - take that leap, follow your dreams, reach your goals, because you can do it! Its not always easy (to say the least), but Im telling you - its worth it! Tomorrow kicks off our Second Little Bird 12 Days of Cheer, as my way of saying thank you - for the support of this little dream, for the support of Small Business here in the Windsor-Essex area, and for the love of Christmas! Sending all kinds of holiday cheer to you and yours this holiday season.

I do love the snow, from indoors, but am also ready for some sunshine and some serious R&R before coming back just in time to end the month with some seriously beautiful things.
