We’ve been asked before, how do we fix the mind? And I’ll start by reminding that we are actually not looking to fix anyone. In fact, only you can truly shift or change a quality in yourself as therapy helps guide you, but even more accurately, we would not have you fix anything but instead learn to accept that part of yourself and learn cognitive, behavioural, or emotional tools to better cope with and manage the presence of an undesired quality. For example, we don’t... fix anxiety per se - anxiety is a typically developed human quality we may even be born with in differing degrees. Of course, when an individual becomes overwhelmed with anxiety (in mind and/or body) it can become all encompassing and feel threatening, frustrating, and distressing (yet protective). Therapy can guide you along the path of acceptance to build confidence and assurance in yourself. Clients learn to recognize their view of the world, including perceptions and underlying beliefs that may make coping harder at times. One psychological theory of development observes that in some people mental health concerns may share a starting point (like, similar triggers or stressors) while in others they may have a very different onset. We all arrived here, perhaps through a different beginning or a different journey, and so at Little Oaks we take time to carefully review clients background, current settings, and relationships etc. Details of our client’s story, details of your surrounding environment, details of your comfort and safety are always considered carefully. We consider all contributing sociobiological, familial, and environmental factors before enacting a therapeutic plan based on your goals. Assessment and treatment are designed just for you- Our unique, interesting, very important client. #psychology #mightyminds #vip #littleoakspsychology #unique #brave #journey #therapy #counselling #explore #acceptance #empowered #emotions #yougotthis #YEG

A sentiment I have long preached and rarely learned. Take stock of the demands on your time and consider the most important things in your life. No matter your goals, you need to be healthy enough to achieve them. Trust me when I say the lesson will be learned, easily or not so.

Despite all the complexities of human interaction, a persons mental health, hunger levels, sleep status, employment issues, social skills, and learning profile, are also important to consider. Clearly, human interactions are not simple, are not surface or shallow, and rarely express only what can be seen at face-value. If you are considering the multitude of factors that play into your exchanges, you are already on the right track. Changing these patterns is possible, it just takes thought, work, and will. Motivation can be a contentious word. In fact, many feel the word itself is a misnomer. Ultimately there are many ways to build up to task completion and goal achievement without that urge or drive that motivates the entire project. Depending on the person, the skill level, the executive functions one has on board, some people may need more support or "scaffolding" in order to build. Of course, finding inspiration in the small steps along the way is important. Small ste...ps toward behaviour change have more lasting, sustainable effects and can lead to greater gains in the future. Find a strategy or a small step that works for you, and start there. Work slowly and steadfastly along these small steps and soon you will find you have climbed a mountain.

Children and youth with ADHD struggle often with learning in different ways. It is common that they may struggle with written expression or mathematics due to issues with planning, organising, and working memory. Today, Larissa & Alara and special guest, Nicole Pertich, R.Psych., will talk about ADHD in the context of different learning needs. Since learning in ADHD has to do with issues of focus and attention, as well as planning and organising, task starting, and task completion, etc., the conversation will also broadly cover learning differences in a counselling setting. Nicole Pertich is an experienced youth psychologist and has worked with complex children and youth in the school system. She offers insights into the adaptations she makes for children and youth with ADHD in the counselling process and the school system.

As an educator, flexibility is key. Instead of thinking: "If the student were brighter, he or she would have grasped what I’m trying to teach, consider a different perspective: What might I, the teacher, do differently? How can I present the material differently, or word the question differently, so this student can succeed? (Diamond, 2013).
