Happy New Year . It feels good to wake up this morning to the bright sunshine and a fresh new year!! The beginning of a new year is always a great time to reset your goals and focus in on your health. It’s good to ask yourself - What can I accomplish this year and more importantly - how do I see myself in 2021?? Our inner belief of who we are and how we want others to see us has a HUGE impact on our daily habits - and whether we make the healthy choice the majority of... the time. In 2021 - let’s move away from All or Nothing and instead strive for a Majority. The MAJORITY of the time... - drink enough water throughout the day - say no thanks to a sugary treat or alcoholic drink - choose leaner proteins and more plant-based options (like a quinoa salad) - pick whole foods (oats, sweet potato, quinoa, fruit/veg, nuts and seeds) over processed foods - eat lots of vegetables - the more colour on your plate, the better - get 10min of exercise (or more) - take a moment to relax the mind - get a good sleep Small, healthy habits like those listed above - when done the majority of the time - create meaningful change!! I’m excited to continue to be a part of your health and wellness journey throughout 2021!! Be safe, be healthy, be strong! It’s going to be a good year

CTV Morning Live asked if I could do 5 segments this morning on water! It's amazing how much there is to know about drinking water... how much to drink and when, what's the best temperature, what could you add for flavour, does coffee or tea count, etc. I think I covered all of this, and more

Thank you Jaden - with CTV Regina Morning Live - for asking me to share some tips and tricks to staying on track with your healthy eating!!

Unhealthy carbs (on their own) won't fill you up... they only make you more hungry When CTV News called me on Monday to comment on the fact that reports are showing the sale of 'comfort food' (such as chips, popcorn, pretzels, etc.) has increased substantially over the last couple weeks - I had to provide my feedback (and thought I'd share with you here): This is something I work on regularly with clients... When we become stressed, anxious, exhausted, bored (due to isolati...on), sad or worried - that immediate need for comfort creeps in. And quite often we find comfort from food/carbohydrates ~ but unfortunately not the healthy ones! And when you eat unhealthy carbohydrates on their own - they have an immediate impact on blood sugars, insulin levels and in a short period of time - cause you to feel tired, sluggish, even more anxious, and hungry... again! So you keep eating, which can turn into an endless amount of snacking all day long! Overeating sugar, carbs, or other treats (including alcohol) will not help our current situation. It'll only make us feel worse - both physically & mentally. During these challenging times - we need a good night's sleep and energy to help us get through our days, which in turn help us manage stress better and keep our immune system stronger. Here are some simple tips that can help you stay healthy during this challenging time: * Find other tools that provide comfort in times of stress/anxiety (besides food)... such as a warm bath, a walk in nature (social distancing of course), listening to music, talking with family or friends, reading a good book or practicing yoga, meditation or deep breathing (being present in the moment) * When choosing snack items - look for healthier options that are <6g sugar/serving (as shown on the nutrition label) AND stick to the serving size (also shown on the nutrition label) * Always pair a carb with a source of protein: - 1/4 cup of nuts + an apple - 1.5 oz of cheese + 13 Mary's Crackers - 1/2 cup cottage cheese + 1/2 cup berries - 3/4 cup plain greek yogurt + 1/4 cup healthy granola - 1-2 TBSP of almond butter + 2-3 Ryvita/Wasa crackers - 1/4 cup hummus (any flavour) + 1-2 cups chopped veg * Your whole-food carbs (oatmeal, rice, sweet potato, quinoa, fruit, veg, etc) are always going to be your healthiest options (as they have 0 refined sugar and loaded with good nutrition/fibre) * And make sure you're drinking enough water throughout the day (body weight/2 = ounces/day) - as this helps to fill you up, feel healthier & gives you so much more energy overall Take care of yourself!! Stay healthy

Whenever you feel overwhelmed, anxious, or worried ~ Grounding & Visualization can help! I use a grounding technique on a regular basis and thought I'd share it here with you this morning: Find a quiet place. Sit in a comfortable position and relax. Take several deep breaths to relax your body.... Feel the tension start to release. Focus only on slowly inhaling and exhaling, and let any other thoughts float by. Visualize a large tree with a wide, strong trunk that extends down the centre of your body, from head to toe. Take a few moments to feel its power and energy. Then visualize the tree's roots growing from the bottom of your feet and rooting down into the ground, making their way deeper and deeper, creating comfort. Focus on these roots when you feel anxious. Let these roots anchor you to the Earth ~ stabilizing you. Rooting yourself in this way provides an inner strength that will keep you centred and protected when life gets overwhelming. When you open your eyes - continue to feel the sensation of grounding... I've done this quite a few times these last few days... it really does help! I also use this to keep me calm when flying (as I've never been great with turbulence) - this was the first time I realized how well this can work! I learned this from Judith Orloff, MD ~ author of many fantastic books on Emotional Freedom and Living as an Empath.
