I don’t care who you are, getting into your issues is scary and uncomfortable. No matter how tough you are, how smart you are, how long you’ve been in therapy ...or treatment or recovery this stuff is hard. It’s hard for me, it’s probably hard for you, it’s hard for the smartest, toughest person you can imagine. The people who succeed in recovery don’t succeed because they’re better or tougher than anyone else. They succeed because they figure out a way to do the work in small enough chunks that they can handle it. Taking the work in small chunks means that the work takes longer and that’s frustrating. But trying to bite off more emotional work than you can cope with is more painful and frustrating and takes EVEN longer. Pace yourself. It’s one of the hardest lessons I had to learn, too.
