In our recent Diabetes Awareness survey, we asked our patients if they’ve had a blood pressure check in the last 6 months. Almost 90% have! And almost 95% of you know that the blood pressure target for people living with diabetes is <130/80. Blood pressure is the force with which blood pushes against the blood vessel walls. High blood pressure means your heart has to work harder than normal to pump blood through the blood vessels, which puts stress on the heart. In our recent Diabetes Awareness survey, 75% of patients surveyed understand how their prescribed medications work, and 68% get an annual medication review by a pharmacist. The pharmacists at LMC are Certified Diabetes Educators and are here to help you understand how your diabetes medications work. We were happy to see that 87% of LMC patients we surveyed in our Diabetes Awareness survey know what an A1C is, and 77% know what their recent A1C is. BUT, we’d love for that number to be 100%! Your A1C is a lab test that measures blood sugar control over a 3 month period. Aim for a result of 7% or less by keeping your blood sugars between 4-7 mmol/L fasting and 5-10 mmol/L 2 hours after a meal.
