It has two main drivers: 1)folks who have celiac or are gluten sensitive. 2) folks who are health conscious and influenced by books like Wheat Belly.... The UN #Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs for short) are really not well understood. But, they are really useful for #business and #ESG #investment. First the 411 1) There are 17 Unique Goals... 2) Each Goal has specific "Targets" of things to be achieved. There are 3-11 Targets. 3) Each Target has an "Indicator", that is a measurable number that is well known. The indicators are similar to standard business measures like performance ratios and #IRR. From a business and ESG point of view, rhe question becomes simpler: 1) Which are the Indialcators my business's move the needle on? 2) How much do I move it? 3) How do I move it? Today is the last day of Sustainatopia. Thank you John Rosser for inviting me. There have been many themes, speakers, and panels at the conference. From small startups, MASSIVE Mutual funds, VCs, Foundations, and non-profits.... The overall problem statement repeated by the different speakers is that the planet is in trouble. As expected, the single biggest theme carbon capture and CO2 reduction. Not huge insights. What was the most eye-opening to me, was the message repeated by all the speakers. The solution to climate change will come from business. The conversation was about profits, ROI, and IRR. Mostly it sounded like a wall street office. Massive amounts of innovative solutions presented were everywhere. There was a solar company that gave a ONE YEAR 225% ROI to an industrial real estate company. It wasn't about producing electricity, it was about enabling a 10 year lease, increase in property value and a refinancing. Unicorns for investors will be found with words like Sustainability, ESG, circular economy, and Plant-Based. The Local Grown Salads Fund produces delicious Organic Ready-To-Eat Culinary Class Salads. We do it in the heart of a city by reusing old factories with Indoor Vertical Farming technology. https://youtu.be/eg-E1FtjaxY

Gabrielle Rubenstein is an entrepreneur and investor with Manna Tree Partners who has focused on investing in the food supply chain. Ellie makes the point that food is grown far way from where people live and that creates business opportunities and sustainability problems. It's true, but an abstract description that doesn't directly recommend an action that describes a return on Investment. Let me explain the business opportunity with a few facts.... 50% of the cost of veggies are in the transportation of the food from the source to the customer. I love that number because it screams opportunity. Why is the number so big? - California and Mexico is where Americans get their veggies - Food moves 1,500 miles (on average) - Shipping companies need profit and trucks cost a lot to operate. - Product is lost and damaged during shipping. Producing the vegetables locally creates two possible scenarios: 1) Lower Prices, or 2) Greater profits. The investor opportunity is to be a local producer and capture the profits.
