GOLD MINE fencing. Long Lake Stewardship has been asked by the Ministry of Energy, Northern Development and Mines to share the following: ENDM would like to inform you that staff will be putting up hazard fencing and signage around the mine site to delineate the mine hazards and keep snowmobilers on the provincial trail that passes through the mine site. The work will begin on Tuesday December 1, will take place during day time hours only and is expected to take approximately 2-3 days to complete. Questions or concerns can be directed to Thomas Sulatycky (705-618-5476).
TALL FLOATING RAFT gone astray several days ago from Uphill Road area near Moxam's Landing. If you know where this is, please call Kevin at 705 626-7712.
AQUATIC DATA COLLECTION - The Ministry of Energy, Northern Development & Mines Mines reports that starting Thursday, October 22 "WOOD has been contracted to conduct a fisheries assessment for the purposes of supporting rehabilitation of the Long Lake Gold Mine. There will be two teams of two, one working within the south bay of Long Lake (accessed from Moxam's Landing) and another working within Luke Creek and the adjacent wetland (accessed from site). The work is expected to take approximately 5 - 7 days during day time hours only. Questions or concerns can be directed to Thomas Sulatycky at 705 618-5476."
LAICS - A fall job for your LLS Committee was to remove the 8 benthic barriers on the lake bottom at four sites. These barriers are essentially black fabric mats on heavy frames and have been used to study a possible control method for Eurasian Water Milfoil. The project (aka "LAICS") under the leadership of biologist Dr. Charles Ramcharan has been a two-year scientific study involving four area lakes each of which are members of the Greater Sudbury Watershed Alliance. We have appreciated the volunteer hours provided in both 2019 and 2020 by scuba divers from the Sudbury Dolphin Aquatic Club, especially Justin V! Attached are a few photos of this week's benthic barrier removals. HAPPY THANKSGIVING WEEKEND EVERYONE !!
