The 411 on Fruit Acids!!!! Fruit in pedicure products! Must be good for our skin - Right????... Fruit Acids are commonly used as facial/glycolic peels by estheticians to improve the appearence and texture of the skin. They are labled using various names: AHA (alpha hydroxy acids), glycolic acid, citric acid, sorbic acid, tartaric acid, fruit acid. But all have a pH of less than 7! They do cause " sloughing" by causing skin to blister and peel ( hence the name Peel ). This action does exposure the underlying skin layer which is soft, fresh with a younger appearance. Do careful consultations and use caution to make sure products will have desired affect, avoid adverse reactions such as burning, scaling, redness, rash, photo-sensitivity, increased skin thickening and loss of moisture. Always, always, always wear gloves to apply products that contain fruit acids to avoid repeated exposure as they can cause photosensitive resulting in discoloration and reaction to the skin, if not rinsed off properly. Note* they are not recommended on the feet or legs of Diabetics, Seniors or immuno-compromised. In fact, some people can have one foot up to 3 inches larger than the other. Oh My Aching Feet!!!! We have all noticed lumps or bumps in the tissue of the plantar aspect of our clients feet, usually during massage. These fibrous collagen... nodules are called plantar fibromas and are embedded in the plantar facsia. They can develop in one or both feet and are usually benign but do not go away or get smaller without treatment. Orthotics or cushioned insoles can help your client with comfort measures along with proper fitting shoes to avoid changes in gait from pain. Consider using Eastern massage techniques such as shiatsu, reflexology or a kansa wand to avoid direct pressure to the fibroma, help restore proper energy flow and reduce pain. Further medical intervention may be required if mass increases in size or pain.
