November 6th, 2019 APM First Nations Signatory and Non-Signatory Chum FSC Fishery... Good afternoon folks, I've copied and pasted an email from DFO below: I’d like to acknowledge and thank those who shared stock assessment updates and comments regarding chum observations and planned fishing efforts. I feel it’s important for everyone to hear reports from the field, such as those provided by Kim Charlie from the stock assessment programs she conducts in the Harrison, and the report from James Archie regarding no fish returning to the Skowkale hatchery, as well as comments from various fish reps reiterating the extreme conservation concern these stocks are facing. It would be good to hear from those representatives in future planning calls to continue to share their observations and would encourage others to share as well. Thank you for continuing to inform these conservation concerns with your community fishers. As discussed on today’s Tier 2 planning call, attached are the FSC licences for the next 2 weekends. We understand that with the chum conservation concerns, effort is expected to be low, however opportunity is provided for those who are interested in obtaining a few more fish for their needs. A copy is attached here for reference. o Fishing downstream has been very limited for the past few days. 9/13/19 APM FN's FSC Fishery Pink Directed Beach Seine... Hi folks, I've copied and pasted an email from DFO below. The official license will be posted soon. Speak to your fish rep for details. Hi Everyone, Please find attached, the beach seine licence for this weekend. The fishery is Pink-directed, with incidental harvest of Chinook, Chum, and hatchery marked Coho salmon. Sockeye salmon, wild Coho, Steelhead, and Sturgeon must not be retained. Date/time: - Saturday September 14, 7am-4pm - Sunday September 15, 7am-4pm Thank you for registering your crews with FVAFS. As this is the first beach seine fishery for this year, I’d like to remind everyone of the conditions of licence from last year. - Nets must not exceed 360 feet in length with a maximum mesh size of 2 inches - All fish other than pink salmon, chinook salmon, hatchery marked coho salmon and chum salmon captured by the beach seine must be removed from the beach seine prior to the beach seine being removed from the water by use of hand, brailer, or a dip net. - Beach seines must not be deployed prior to the start of the fishery each day at 0700 hours. - Nets must be pulled into the shore before the end of the daily opening and must not be in the act of fishing after the close of the fishery at 1600 hours. - Beach seine sets greater than ~1,000 fish must be spilled and released to less than 1,000 fish prior to sorting for non-target species. With the potential to catch large amounts of fish per set, in order to effectively sort and release non-target species (especially sockeye) to the water alive and unharmed we ask that sets be kept to a manageable number. Also, sets must be sorted for non-target species prior to removing the net from the water. Good luck fishing.
