Meet Our Ambassadors Series: Kimmel Alcide has been teaching yoga for 6 years and hosts online and in person experiences for individuals, schools and businesses and is endearingly continuing on as one of our store ambassadors. Learn more about where her inspiration comes from, her de-stressing routine and how a Pan Drum might be in her future! 1. What discipline do you specialize in?... Can I say that my discipline is connecting people and creating community? Yoga just happens to be my vehicle for bringing people together. 2. How long have you been in practice? I feel like I’ve been on the path all my life, but in record I’ve been practicing for 10 years and teaching for 6 years. 3. Why did you choose yoga? How did you end up getting involved? I didn’t choose yoga, it chose me. During my third year of university, a professor recommended that I practice yoga, so I did. I remember every detail of my first practice, I just loved it and never stopped. 4. Where do you teach and what business do you own? I host online and in person experiences for individuals, schools and businesses; soon to launch my website and business name. Stay tuned for that! You can also find me at Life Time Athletic (Ajax & Woodbridge). 5. Who/what inspires you? Where does your inspiration come from? That’s easy! My students inspire me (I say my very loosely because I do not own anyone). Witnessing their transformation in practice, their change in perspective, habits etc brings me joy. 6. What are you most grateful for in 2020? Ooooo. This is a good one. I’m grateful for so many things this year, but if we’re picking one, I would say that I’m grateful for the time I’ve had at home with my family and the days of solitude with myself. 7. How do you manage stress and what do you feel is the most effective way to de-stress? When it comes to managing stress, I have a few different techniques. I ensure that I practice yoga for a minimum of 30 minutes each day along with a meditation. I also break up big tasks into smaller ones so that it doesn’t become overwhelming. For de-stressing, I select a playlist from my music library, then I allow my body and breath to direct my movement. I also enjoy long hot showers; it feels like I’m washing my stresses away. 8. What is your favorite snack/cheat meal? Does oatmeal with peanut butter, maple syrup and goji berries count? 9. List 3 things you wouldn’t want to live without. My binkie (yes you read that correctly) oatmeal and audio books. 10. What is one thing you would like to learn in the next year? I would love to get a Guda/Pan drum and learn to play it! Meet our Ambassador Series: Courtney Cuellar currently teaches yoga at Power Yoga Canada, Lifetime Ajax and virtually online and is one of our newest store ambassadors. Read on to learn how she was first introduced to yoga and how breath work has also become a staple in her practices. Welcome to the team, Courtney! ... 1. What discipline do you specialize in? My disciplines are yoga and breath work. 2. How long have you been in practice? I have been in practice for almost 7 years, 10 years as a student. 3. Why did you choose yoga? How did you end up getting involved? An incredible friend of mine introduced me to yoga during some deeply challenging times in my life. I remember it was the only sense of peace I felt during those trying times. Breath work took me even deeper in my journey to heal and I signed up to become a facilitator of Breath Work after my very first session! It is a true gift to share both of these practices. 4. Where do you teach? Before the pandemic, I was teaching all over Durham and the GTA. I currently teach at PYC Oshawa, Lifetime Ajax, and online. I was teaching for some of our sister PYC studios as well. 5. Who/what inspires you? Where does your inspiration come from? Connection, community and relationships are what drive everything I do. The people who inspire me most are the ones who are doing their work, living their values and showing up with vulnerability, courage and passion. Truly my inspiration comes from my students, my clients, my relationships everywhere. 6. What are you most grateful for in 2020? In 2020, I am most grateful for all the time I was able to spend with my family this year, my wonderful husband, and all the incredible transformation that has arisen through difficult times! 7. How do you manage your stress and what do you feel is the most effective way to de-stress? When I need to de-stress I take deep breaths, I practice yoga or talk a walk. When I feel like I have a lot weighing on me, I know I need to lie down and do a breath work session. This is by far the biggest stress reliever of all. 8. What is your favorite snack or cheat meal? My all time favorite food is pizza. I also love cookies (Dad’s oatmeal or Oreos will do the trick!). 9. List 3 things that you wouldn’t want to live without. My family, my yoga mat, and pizza! 10. What is one thing you want to learn in the next year? I am always learning, always open to new knowledge. I want to learn more about the brain, neural pathways and how to shift old paradigms and programmed behavior. Knowing that so much of how we operate comes from our childhood, I am excited to learn how to heal the wounded parts of us that stand in the way of self love, self worth and the ability to achieve our greatest dreams. Meet Our Ambassador Series: Tyler Phillips is a co-owner and coach at GYM 725 and one of our newest store ambassadors. Take a moment to learn what inspires him, what he’s grateful for, and all things sweet tooth related. Welcome to the team, Tyler! ... 1. What discipline do you specialize in? If I had to describe it, I would go with a modern take on classic strength & conditioning workouts. 2. How long have you been in practice? I have been coaching CrossFit, weightlifting, and strength & conditioning to some degree for about 10 years. 3. Why did you choose that practice and how did you end up getting involved? Around 17 years of age, I had stopped playing sports. CrossFit and Olympic Weightlifting became a means of filling the void left from sports. I quickly became obsessed, and shortly after I was offered a coaching position at the local CrossFit gym I went toand I’ve been hooked ever since. 4. What business do you own? I am currently a co-owner, and operator at GYM 725 located in Oshawa. My main focus is to create a safe space for anyone to come to move, lift and sweat in a community-focused environment. 5. Who/what inspires you? Where does your inspiration come from? Inspiration comes from many places, but the big one for me has always been my dad. Unfortunately, he passed away years ago after a short battle cancer. Growing up, he always instilled the values of hard work, dedication, and putting others’ needs above your own. I try to keep these values in mind everyday. 6. What are you most grateful for in 2020? In 2020, I’m most grateful for community. Spending 5 months in lockdown reminds you of the importance of connection! 7. How do you manage stress and what do you feel is the most effective way to de-stress? Stress management is a tough one. Ultimately, I find it’s best to be proactive and try and find/maintain a balance between work & downtime. I often use and would recommend meditation & breath work. I recently saw the quote Meditating to reduce stress is like using an umbrella for 7 minutes in a 24 hour rain storm. You’re still going to get really wet. Learning to balance your life is the best form of stress management. 8. What is your favorite snack or cheat meal? I’m a sugar baby. Some people have a sweet tooth, I have sweet teeth haha. So for cheats, baked goods & ice cream are go-to’s for me! 9. List 3 things you wouldn’t want to live without. Fitness, family and coffeein no particular order. 10. What is one thing you would like to learn in the new year? In the next year, I really want to get more into content creation/media; specifically photography and videography. I have a good amount of equipment (a good camera, gimbal, etc.) but I lack the know-how. Really planning on finding time next year to learn more and start creating content! It’s important for pilates instructor, Siu Lin (@siulim), to feel comfortable in her own skill at all times, and especially during class. Comfort and mobility is keythat’s why the Align pants are her favorite choice. I love that the waistband lies flat and doesn’t dig in. Combine that with its weightless Nulu fabric and you have a buttery soft pant that feels like you’re not wearing anything at all.
