Here at Lush we are dedicated to our work of Belonging, Inclusion and Diversity, this includes amplifying the voices and stories of the BIPOC community. At Lush Pickering we had the pleasure of meeting and hearing the story of Solange Burrell, an aspiring author who has written a novel called Yeseni and the Daughter of Peace. She is currently crowdfunding for the publication of her book with Unbo...und, a UK based publishing house and the world's first crowdfunding publisher. Traditional publishers are becoming increasingly risk averse and after approaching several publishing houses, Solange was told that her art was not 'commercial enough'. BIPOC are disproportionately affected by this, with only 2% of published authors and illustrators in the UK being people of colour and only 5% of people in the publishing industry self-identifying as black African or of Caribbean descent. Solange chose to publish with Unbound to challenge the publishing industry and show that there is a demand for black writing. This book will not exist without your support. Hey Lushies! We're excited to share with you that Parents Engaged in Education is hosting an online auction on Tuesday, August 25th from 6:30-8:30 PM. All proceeds from this event will go towards building a Family Service Centre in Scarborough! It will serve as a safe space for students and families in need of support, where they will be able to pick out the supplies they need throughout the school year, as well as gain access to technology and amenities!... Parents Engaged in Education was formed by committed parent leaders, teachers and principal who are focused on providing resources to school councils across the province of Ontario. We are also exploring new ways to engage parents and excite them about becoming involved in their children’s education. Make sure you check them out and don't forget to support them!
