Laura Winters, executive director of the St. John’s Status of Women Council, says the partnership was intended to improve relationships between the police and sex workers. She says that intention hasn’t been met. It hasn’t resulted in improved conditions for the people SHOP serves. So at this point we thought let's redirect our efforts towards supporting people in the sex industry which is what SHOP does and stop putting that effort into this relationship that really is not having fruitful outcomes for us, said Winters.

"My experience as a survivor of intimate partner and gender-based violence, moreover, has taught me that the police cannot protect us and that the struggle to end violence cannot be found within punitive and carceral systems."

"When the pandemic first hit, establishments such as strip clubs, massage parlours and escort agencies, were forced to close, and independent escorts were constrained from offering sexual services in their work studios or own homes. While some of them have managed to move their work online, others struggle to stay afloat in the pandemic climate. Despite major job loss on all fronts, sex workers have been unlikely to access Employment Insurance or the Canada Emergency Relief Benefit."

Oh no! Dr Wallace died. I just found out from a member of the 1989 PONY Coordinating Cttee! Joyce Wallace came to our first big PONY meeting in the fall of '89.... A few members were bristling. She was in fact the most visible representative of "the establishment" at that meeting. But she was ours to bristle over, one part of our crazy quilt that includes both service and provocation. Her daughter Julia Query made a brilliant film (with Vicki Funari) LIVE NUDE GIRLS UNITE! in which we see those tensions up close. It's a wonderful doc, funny and heartwarming, everyone should see it to get a sense of Joyce Wallace. Her project was called Foundation for Research on Sexually Transmitted Diseases. FROSTD aka "frosted." At one point I heard it was being renamed "From Our Streets with Dignity" (still FROSTD with a different look) -- not sure what happened there. Until I read the NY Times obit, I didn't know much about her past. Turns out Dr Wallace published one of the first reports on HIV ... in the summer of 1981. That sent a bittersweet pang through my heart. Joyce Wallace was integral to the life of PONY and the New York sex worker community. She was down to earth, quirky and not always PC. Many PONY members worked with Dr Wallace and FROSTD over the years. There's even a subplot in one of my novels inspired by the FROSTD outreach van. With affection and fond memories.

Previously interviewed by FOX Files investigator Chris Hayes, Donah Sandford shares the full story with SWOP Behind Bars (SBB) of her 2009 experience with misappropriation of power by law enforcement in St. Louis, Missouri.

Our new set of infographics, produced in partnership with the Global Network of Sex Work Projects, examines the human rights violations behind ‘End Demand’ laws.... Although the negative effects of these laws are well documented, they continue to be presented as a progressive response to trafficking and sex work. ‘End Demand’ laws have serious repercussions for sex workers in the areas of policing, access to services, safety at work, migration, trafficking and stigma. In their engagements with the #CEDAW Committee, sex workers from around the world have made enormous efforts to highlight the negative impact of ‘End Demand’ on their own lives. This week, the Committee will adopt a General Recommendation on trafficking in women and girls in the context of global migration. We hope it will reflect the lived realities of sex workers and contribute to ending the harm caused by ‘End Demand’. If the General Recommendation instead takes an 'End Demand' approach, this will serve to legitimise rights violations against sex workers, which is antithetical to the spirit of CEDAW. View our full set of infographics here: https://www.iwraw-ap.org//the-human-rights-violations-beh/ The FACT Manifesto offers a rights-based alternative to harmful anti-trafficking approaches: https://www.iwraw-ap.org/fact/

"Stories of young women paying their way through school with sex work are nothing new, but in the seven months since the WHO declared the coronavirus to be a pandemic, online sex work often left out of discussions of ride-hailing and food delivery apps has become an increasingly mainstream facet of the gig economy, and people like Clara say the risks are worth it to keep themselves afloat."

While overdoses are a medical emergency, police are often attending overdose scenes with negative consequences for people who use drugs despite the fact that police presence has not been requested nor is it warranted. Full comic: http://www.hivlegalnetwork.ca//comic-no-police-at-overdo/
