Manitoba Tornado Watch / Manitoba Blizzard Watch 04.12.2020

UPDATE: The CME reached the earth at 01:30 UT on Dec 10 but it unfortunately did not result in the predicted geomagnetic storm. A new solar cycle has just begun which means that there will likely be many CMEs in future months and more chances to see auroras. If the skies are clear tonight and/or tomorrow night in your area be on the alert for aurora. Space Weather Canada and the NOAA are both predicting stormy geomagnetic conditions. See the link below for more details on the space weather forecast and the current conditions of the potential geomagnetic storm: https://instantweatherinc.com//be-on-the-alert-for-aurora-

Good evening Manitoba! As we said a few days ago, we've been working on a few new forecasts and features for the winter season. With the impending storm that could bring several hours of freezing rain to some parts of Southern Manitoba, we thought this would be a good time to introduce our... Power Outage Forecast! If you missed our regular detailed forecast for this event, you can find it here: https://instantweatherinc.com//blizzard-near-miss-for-sout... We know it can be hard to decipher the potential impacts from the traditional freezing rain accretion map and it also depends on many other variables. So we've done the hard work here and have created an easy-to-understand categorical forecast for power outages. If you find this type of forecast helpful then please let us know in the comments and also include any feedback you may have. We plan on issuing these with every potentially impactful freezing rain event for Southern Manitoba over the winter. And now onto the actual forecast: A system bringing blizzard conditions to parts of Saskatchewan and Northern Manitoba will also bring the potential for many hours of freezing rain in some areas of Southern Manitoba. The hardest-hit area appears to be just to the northwest of Brandon including Virden, Roblin and Dauphin where up to 6-12mm of freezing rain accretion is possible. The heaviest freezing rain is expected to occur between Sunday morning and late into the evening. This combined with strong wind gusts will likely bring down trees and power lines causing many power outages in the region. The City of Brandon and surrounding regions will likely see some freezing rain in the morning because temperatures warm up enough. Therefore, the potential is there for some power outages but the event isn't expected to be prolonged enough unlike those further north to cause any major power disruptions. Any ice accretion will quickly melt as temperatures rise above the freezing mark around the noon hour. Stay safe everyone! - Brennen P.

Hi everyone! How are you doing this evening? You might remember us mentioning the potential for a major winter storm that could affect Manitoba this weekend. At the moment, models have shifted towards a later and more northern track starting Sunday into early next week.... Southern Manitoba is still not out of the woods yet especially with the freezing rain threat. BUT at the moment it looks more like heavy rainfall for much of Southern Manitoba. Lots of snow through Northern Manitoba and heavy freezing rain in the central part of the province still looks possible. Models are still shifting around and looks like it was a good decision to not issue a premature forecast. Given the shift towards early next week we’re going to give it a few more models run to confirm this track and hope to get a more detailed forecast out tomorrow or Friday at the latest. We don’t like chasing each model run so we’ll wait until we have good confidence in this event before forecasting it. No one needs more stress during these times! :) Side note, this storm will very likely have a big impact on much of Saskatchewan given the current track. So be sure to follow Instant Weather Saskatchewan for the very latest on that side of the border. More details soon! - Brennen P.

Manitoba Tornado Watch / Manitoba Blizzard Watch 22.10.2020

Good evening everyone! You might be hearing some whispers of a potential winter storm or snowstorm that could affect Manitoba next weekend between Nov 7-9th. We wanted to let you know that we're closely monitoring this but it's way way way too early to be talking about any specifics. Could we see a major snowstorm somewhere in Manitoba? Yes. Could we see sunshine throughout the entire weekend? Yes. This is something 5-7 days in advance and models have a tendency to shift arou...nd with each new run that far out. Even within 48-72 hours, it can be hard to nail down the exact track of a system. With that being said, we won't be putting out a full forecast with graphics and maps until we're at least moderately confident in a rough track. Our aim is to produce a forecast that needs very little adjustments as constantly having to change our forecast helps no one and causes confusion. So hopefully we'll be able to have something out by the middle of this week at the latest if the models don't shift. The moral of the story, no need to panic but keep in mind that as we head into the winter season you should be prepared for whatever Mother Nature throws at us. Whether that be next weekend or in the coming weeks at least you will be ready. As we all know, it can get quite active in Manitoba over the next few months. Stay with us as we'll have all your weather information that you will need to stay informed this winter. Plus we have some new features and forecast that we will be launching this season! - MBW Team
