The People’s Injunction for the Ancient Forests... We have been given no other options for meaningful public participation and so we are here as working people sacrificing income, family time and normalcy of life to stand on behalf of all life and all generations at a time of acute ecological, social and economic crisis and peacefully disrupt the status quo that is destroying the planet!

A young visitor observed the peaceful visit from the Police Division Liaison Team at Caycuse Camp last week. I've been witnessing the South Island old-growth blockades the past couple weeks and am preparing to return this weekend. There are stories unfolding that are about much more than a movement to save old-growth forests and I'm dedicated to capturing those stories for as long as it takes.

The swans that you might just miss if you drive too fast. And a poem to brighten your heart~ Within the grip of winter, it is almost impossible to imagine the spring. The gray perished landscape is shorn of color. Only bleakness meets the eye; everything seems severe and edged. Winter is the oldest season; it has some quality of the absolute. Yet beneath the surface of winter, the miracle of spring is already in preparation; the cold is relenting; seeds are wakening up. Color...s are beginning to imagine how they will return. Then, imperceptibly, somewhere one bug opens and the symphony of renewal is no longer reversible. From the black heart of winter a miraculous, breathing plenitude of color emerges. The beauty of nature insists on taking its time. Everything is prepared. Nothing is rushed. The rhythm of emergence is a gradual slow beat always inching its way forward; change remains faithful to itself until the new unfolds in the full confidence of true arrival. Because nothing is abrupt, the beginning of spring nearly always catches us unawares. It is there before we see it; and then we can look nowhere without seeing it. ~John O'Donohue

Happy December from Tofino! It’s a different kind of winter over here while the province is in lockdown and non-essential travel means little tourist towns are closed for the holidays. But we will be open again in the New Year and I’m looking forward to photographing portraits and weddings next summer. I have gift certificates for holiday giving and the promise of future west coast memories.

I love to play and spending time with little rascals brings out the silly kid in me. Perhaps one of my favourite testimonials ever is when Wylie asked his mum, Is Marnie a kid or an adult? I like her. She is a kid and she is fun! Thanks for your words Wylie! You might not crack a smile easily, but you and your brothers sure are good at being fun and photogenic kids!

This rock has captured my attention many times just as I’ve captured it’s beauty. It’s a sun dial. A clock. When the shadows are in the east, you’ll find me at the horizon’s edge. Chasing the light and falling in love with reflections. Robin Wall Kimmerer writes about the how the grammar of animacy could well be a restraint on our mindless exploitation of land. Through bridging indigenous wisdom and scientific knowledge, she demonstrates how to be native to a place we must learn to speak its language. Maybe a grammar of animacy could lead us to a whole new ways of living in the world, other species a sober people, a world with a democracy of species, not tyranny of one- with moral responsibility to water and wolves, with a legal system that recognized the standing of other species. It’s all in the pronouns.

Our hearts are broken for the family and friends of the 26 year old woman who was shot and killed by police in Edmundston, New Brunswick last week. She is from the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation (the land that Tofino occupies) and she was living on the other side of the country with her mother and daughter. This tragedy is believed to be racially motivated. Last year, the final report on the missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls was given to the Canadian government at ...the closing ceremony for the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. The 1200-page report includes many recommendations to address cycles of racial violence. It has 231 calls for justice. It calls for an absolute paradigm shift to dismantle colonialism and heal the legacy of genocide that we are all embedded within. After one year, action has not been taken and organizations are calling out the government’s inaction. Trudeau took a knee at the protests in Ottawa last week. It’s an empty gesture without any action. After his lengthy pause when reporters asked him to comment on Trump’s call for military action at the protests, he responded that it is a time for coming together, for listening, for learning and acknowledging racism. But he forgot to say that it is a time for ACTION. It’s time for the Canadian government to take action on the 231 calls for justice in the report presented to the government at the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Women and Girls. It’s been a year since this was presented. It is time, NOW, to end the genocide and to transform systemic and societal values that have worked to maintain colonial violence.

The sun shone down on the Tla-o-qui-hat Nation today with a blessing. My heart is broken tonight as I feel the anger, pain and grief for the brothers and sisters that have suffered at the hands of white supremacy. The system is not broken. It was built this way. And it’s up to each and every one of us to do our part in creating an inclusive, unified and loving world.

A few of my favourite images from the Soul Portrait Retreat in Australia earlier this year. This was the last social gathering that I was able to photograph before everything changed. Such sweet memories I will cherish forever.
